Innovation = Design

July 20th, 2008 by Larry

Earlier this year, I had the pleasure of spending a few days in Beijing. It was impossible to deny the city’s excitement for hosting this summer’s Olympics games. This media guide was given to people who attended the Nike 706 exhibit inside China’s up and coming arts district recently. The book, called Nike 100 details 100 of the most innovative moments in Nike’s history as a result of obsessive design and pursuit of perfection. As I read through the book, I recalled some of my favorite moments in sports history including Michael Johnson’s gold shoes at the ATL Olympics in ’96 and Michael Jordan winning the NBA Slam Dunk Contest in his Air Jordan III’s.

At the end of the day it’s all about reducing drag, reducing weight, and creating the lightest aerodynamics possible. Nike was founded by Phil Knight and his track coach at the University of Oregon, Bill Bowerman. Bowerman was obsessed with making footwear lighter and hand-stitched sneakers for his team before they were able to mass produce anything. It’s worth it to check out nikelab.com as it drives home Bowerman’s ethos.

I’ve spent countless hours on nikelab.com watching designer’s video explanations behind the products they’ve made. I even went out to try on the Lunar Racer this weekend. It’s really lightweight and feels like you’re walking on the moon. It’s crazy how they do it.

The Americola

July 19th, 2008 by Larry

Here in Hotlanta, we’re always trying to find new ways to stay cool during the summer. When we want our caffeine fix, we don’t drink iced coffees or americanos because they’re boring. Ted Ullrich (always thinking of fresh ideas) invented the Americola so that we could stay cool, buzzed, and uniquely Atlanta. The first step to enjoying an Americola is befriending your local barista. Our baristas of choice hold it down at Octane. These kids are ATL’s coffee experts. Seriously, they go to all kinds of espresso-making competitions and win with their eyes closed. If your local barista is down, then ask him/her to follow this recipe exactly as follows:

1) fill a pint glass halfway with ice
2) brew espresso directly into glass
3) add Coca-Cola (directly from fountain) until the mixture slightly overflows

Thanks to Matt Crumpton for letting us harass him while downing his Americola.

MSTRKRFT – Love In This Club (Remix)

July 19th, 2008 by Larry

This one has been out for a minute but it’s so good! We were all dumbfounded when we heard Toronto’s MSTRKRFT remix of Usher’s “Love In This Club”. Atlanta’s #1 fancy boy instantly gains cred. Within a day, everyone in our crew added it to their “Summer Bangers” playlist on iTunes. The best part is the breakdown at 1:30 that seamlessly turns into The Dominos – Layla. So smart!

Dunk High Nylons All Summer Long

July 16th, 2008 by Larry

Thanks to Nike for reintroducing me to my true love. I’ve been rocking these bad boys for about a month straight since our PROCESS photo shoot at El Bar. They’ve touched the holy grounds of all our favorite Atlanta spots from Ponce to Peachtree.

They’re a classic Dunk High inspired by 1984 Vandals that used nylon. The choice of material back then was to create a lighter hoop shoe that feels soft and broken-in the first time you put them on. My Dunk High Nylons [Metallic Gold/Black/White ] are part of a 3 shoe quickstrike pack that includes 2 other colorways. No word on an exact release date, but expect them this summer/fall.

The same innovation push for “superior lightweight” is manifested in modern times through the Hyperdunk which drops on 7/26. If you’re not sure what that is, you’ve obviously been sleeping under a rock. Find out more on that tip here, here, and here. They’ve done an amazing job creating awareness and they KILLED IT with the Back to the Future II tie-in, which happens to be my favorite movie ever. If I could go back in time like Marty McFly, I’d find my way onto the creative team behind the Nike Hyperdunk campaign.

Anyway, if you want to see the Dunk High Nylons in person, you can find me at the Local tonight.

We’re taking PROCESS to Agenda in San Diego from September 4th — 6th. The Agenda Trade Show is a forum for the most inspired in the streetwear and action sports industries to unite. Lines speak for themselves and buyers are not intimidated by the usual overwhelming tradeshow experience. From the garage-run lines on the verge of explosion, to the well-established elite, Agenda caters to the needs of buyers and brands that exist on a higher level of design and aesthetic. With a strong emphasis in style, art, music and culture, the Agenda experience will be as much of a lesson as it is a tool for us to launch PROCESS.

Potential Buyers: if you would like to schedule an appointment with us, please email sales@wearetheprocess.com.

Clipse – Fast Life

July 2nd, 2008 by Larry

photo by Joe Martinez [Sneaker Pimps, Atlanta 2007]

Clipse have been one of my favorite hip-hop groups for a few years. I’ve seen them here in the ATL as well as in Austin. I could tell from their performances, they enjoy playing smaller venues for crowd interaction despite their massive popularity. When I found out they had a new single, I had to share it. Supposedly they’re working on an album that’s slated for a Fall/Winter 2008 release. Stay on it!
