Erie Seawolves MiLB Brand Identity by Ryan Wood

November 16th, 2011 by Larry

Awhile back, I mentioned that I teach a design class at Portfolio Center. Occasionally I’ll have my students redesign a sports team identity. I’ve never posted end-of-quarter projects and readers have been asking to see the results, so here is the first post of the sort. I’ll begin posting finished work from my students whenever I feel like it. Last quarter, I asked a 2nd quarter student, Ryan Wood, to redesign a minor league baseball team. I gave him the freedom to pick a team that he thought had a wonky brand identity, so he chose the Erie Seawolves.

10 weeks ago, Ryan didn’t know a lick of Illustrator, so I wouldn’t let him use his computer. I forced him to use what he had: a pencil and a notepad. Hundreds (and I seriously mean hundreds) of sketches later, he was ready to take all his graphic elements into the computer. Rather, I allowed him to use his computer once he exhausted every possibility he could think of. Within a matter of weeks, Ryan earned his Illustrator chops and churned out a beautifully executed MiLB identity for a 2nd quarter design student. There are a few things I’d like to see him to do push his concept further and he’ll have plenty of time for that during his final 1.5 years at Portfolio Center. See it all after the jump. The Media Has Turned Their Own Blind Eye in the Penn State Scandal

November 16th, 2011 by John W.

Seven days ago, if somebody would have said to me, “Joe Paterno will be fired within the week because of a sex scandal,” I would have told them to hop back on their unicorn and beam themselves up. Well, unicorns don’t exist and “Joe Pa” is toast.

The Sportsfan Journal

November 15th, 2011 by Larry

Calling all sports fans! Please take a moment to check out this new website, The Sportsfan Journal; written by 2 of my good friends, Ed Maisonet III & Kenny Masenda. I’ve know these 2 cats for a few years now, and I believe their form of journalism is a refreshing take on sports. I find myself reading their articles more than I do from the mainstream sports media on the bigger websites. Take a look for yourself here.

Assassin’s Creed Revelations – Athletes TV Ad

November 7th, 2011 by Georgios

Today, Ubisoft announced a partnership with several of the greatest athletes in the world who will appear in broadcast commercials alongside Ezio Auditore, the legendary hero in Assassin’s Creed Revelations, the blockbuster action video game hitting store shelves on November 15. Starring in the campaign are two time MMA champion BJ Penn, game-changing running back Adrian Peterson and one of the most dynamic professional basketball players in the world, Derrick Rose. The athletes, known for their legendary status in their respective sport and passion for Assassin’s Creed were selected by Ubisoft to be a part of the Assassin’s Creed Revelations’ #Leave Your Legacy campaign.

Revelations will be released for PS3 and Xbox on November 15th. Looks like I know what I will be doing if the NBA doesn’t get this lockout situation figured out.

EAMES: The Architect and The Painter [Trailer]

November 7th, 2011 by Larry

Whenever people ask me who I’m influenced by (as a designer & human) the first thing out of my mouth is always “Charles & Ray Eames”. I cannot begin to describe how their work and approach to their careers represent how I strive to exist.

The husband-and-wife team of Charles and Ray Eames are widely regarded as America’s most important designers. Perhaps best remembered for their mid-century plywood and fiberglass furniture, the Eames Office also created a mind-bending variety of other products, from splints for wounded military during World War II, to photography, interiors, multi-media exhibits, graphics, games, films and toys. But their personal lives and influence on significant events in American life — from the development of modernism, to the rise of the computer age — has been less widely understood. Narrated by James Franco, Eames: The Architect and the Painter is the first film dedicated to these creative geniuses and their work.

This film opens on November 18th at the IFC Center in New York City. For a full list of playdates, head here. Anyone want to road trip to Tallahassee on December 9th?!?

FKi x Yael Naim – Toxic

November 6th, 2011 by Larry

Transformers N The Hood is a mixtape from FKi featuring prod from Diplo and We Are the Process brand homies, Heroes + Villains and Mayhem. It’s a crossover project bridging Hiphop and Dubstep and will release in full on Mad Decent in a few weeks.

The above video is a semi-retake on the Britney Spears track, Toxic, from 2004. I don’t think I’ve every heard anything quite like this before. In fact, I kinda love it. The right amount of dubstep, rap lyrics, a pop hook, hipster chicks, and indie credibility. The sample for the hook is sung by Yael Naim. Don’t know who she is? Remember this?
