George Kiel III of Nice Kicks in Austin, TX has recently started narrating Kicks on Court videos, highlighting some of the best on-court sneaker action in the NBA. In his most recent video, Allen Iverson’s 5 Best Kicks & Crossover Combinations, GKIII throws it back with our Southern Series tee from the Nice Kicks vs. We Are the Process capsule collection we released exactly 12 months ago. I recently lending my acting “talents” to the powers that be at Philips Arena by participating in this commercial for Taco Mac and the Atlanta Hawks. All it took to convince me to show up was a ton of chicken wings, beer, tickets to the game, and my good friends Jamie Gordon and Matty Ryan to be in the spot as well. To top it off, I got to meet the Atlanta Hawks legend aka The Human Highlight Film, Dominique Wilkins. Add this one to the “portfolio”!
Known for rowdy shows and catchy rock songs, Turf War started in 2008 as a bedroom solo project for lead singer John Robinson and quickly turned into a full band with Brian McGrath filling in on drums and backup vocals, Cecil Moss on Guitar, and Bradley Morris on bass. They created a sound reminiscent of early Replacements and brought on a full party attitude to their live sets.
After playing the club circuit in Augusta for 3 years and gaining a wide audience they set their dreams higher and made the move to Atlanta, GA. It didn’t take long for people in Atlanta to start recognizing the bands energy and catchy songs. They even caught the attention of fellow Atlanta rocker Ian St Pé of the Black Lips, who came on to produce the bands first full length. In the process of recording the album they met Ian McDonald, who was engineering their record.
John quickly saw a likeness in Ian musically and asked him to join Turf War, making them a five piece. The band headed out to Texas on their first run outside of GA in 2011 to play SXSW, looking for a label to put out their record and hoping to find a wider audience. There in Austin they met label owner Rob Mason of Old Flame records. They hit it off and decided to make a partnership to release the self titled debut of Turf War Years of Living Dangerously, set to street on October 18, 2011. Turf War will be appearing at SXSW 2012 as a showcasing artist.
Sidenote: The video for Cheers to the Years is directed by Atlanta’s own, Jason Travis, who is also the man behind the lens of the We Are the Process Spring ‘12 lookbook. Stay tuned for that to drop next week as the brand will hit the road to showcase at StyleX for the 2nd straight year.
Today marks the release of the official video for DoYaThing, Gorillaz’ new song featuring James Murphy from LCD Soundsystem and Andre 3000.
Most of the video takes place at the new Gorillaz HQ on Wobble St. where we get a tour of all the zaniness that goes on when 2-D, Noodle, Murdoc, & Russell aren’t making music. The long awaited FKi mixtape, Transformers n’ the Hood, has finally dropped and available for free download at livemixtapes.com. Awhile back, we posted a this video/track by FKi, a new project that was being backed by two of my favorite ATL producers, Heroes & Villains and Mayhem.
Check out the video (above) for lead single, On A Roll, Produced by Mayhem, DJ Spinz & FKi. This track has everything I’ve ever wanted the dubstep genre to embrace, including rapping and original lyrics. There’s more to dubstep than the drop! Nothing is more annoying than a track that repeats the same word or phrase for 10 minutes straight. On A Roll is the perfect blend of lyrical irreverence and wobble that the kids love.

With the ever popular trend of Sh*t Girls Say spinoff videos, I thought I’d post some videos that apply to creative industry folks. We’ve either been in this category, or have worked with people that have said these exact lines. My favorite: “It’s not a font, it’s a typeface.” I say this to people all the time and am willing to get in an argument over that terminology. ESPECIALLY, if I drew those letters by hand! NOT A FONT! IFC’s hit original series, Portlandia, is back for it’s highly-anticipated second season. After last season’s 6 episodes, I can’t wait to see what Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein have prepared to show the world as their mutated version of life in Portland.
