Jorge Menes Holiday Cards

December 7th, 2008 by Larry

Epidemik Coalition resident photographer, Jorge Menes, commissioned our former intern/illustrator E. Charrow to draw his holiday cards. I really like how the watercolors interplay with the line art. If you were nice to Jorge this year, you’ll probably get one of these in the mail.

Check them out individually after the jump. Read the rest of this entry »

Bear Fight!

December 7th, 2008 by Larry

Bear Fight - A drink, of sorts, consisting of two drinks taken one after the other. An Irish Car Bomb and a Jäger Bomb. You simply line them up and take one after the other, wait 5-10 minutes, and then you will know how it has earned it’s name.

This celebratory drink, although not invented by us in Atlanta, has been a favorite of ours lately. I know you’re thinking that we’re crazy, but you really only take on a Bear Fight when you’re looking to get the evening started without delay. Spending the holidays with good friends are perfect for taking on the Bear. The Bear Fights shown above were from a few weeks back in Austin with a crew of friends I hadn’t seen in years.

Next time you see Colleen or Rosa at the EL, tell ‘em we sent you. Be careful!

Set It Off: Erica Jamison

December 3rd, 2008 by Larry

Name:
Erica Jamison

Aka:
The Jam Is On

Website:
mintgallery.org

Where are you from?
I was born near Athens, grew up in Barnesville, GA and I’ve lived in Atlanta for a little over 6 years.

Who do you work for?
My day job is for a post-production house called LAB 601.  We do editorial work for films, commercials, TV shows, etc. and I am the Business Development Manager which is code for AWESOME. My night and weekend job is being the Director of MINT - we’re a nonprofit arts group dedicated to encouraging and facilitating creativity in Atlanta and Georgia.

What are your Current Project(s)?
MINT is working on some really fun stuff right now - we’ve got our Postcard Pinup Show coming up on December 13th. We host one of these every year and we strongly encourage anyone and everyone to participate. There are usually between 60 and 70 artists involved and we do a raffle with lots of prizes from local vendors and it turns into a big party. We’re planning our schedule for next year and I’m really excited about some of the exhibits we’re putting together - especially the cult film project being curated by Millie DeChirico and Eric Weber of Turner. Also, we’ve been talking to the guys over at WonderRoot about some public art projects. I’m hoping to start hosting some classes and workshops really soon as well. Personally, I have some ideas for video/installation work that I’d like to get started on. There are not enough hours in the day.

Who would you love to work with?
Michel Gondry, Chris Johanson, Francois Truffaut, David Gordon Green, Liz Lemon

If you had to give all your sneakers away to charity except for one pair, which ones would you keep?
I actually don’t own any sneakers (I know, I know!) I do wear my Vans slip-ons like they are going out of style so I don’t think I could ever give them away.

What’s on your iPod right now?
My ipod broke (it was so old that it was the size of the Saved by the Bell cell phone). But in my CD player and on my computer I am listening to new(ish): Fleet Foxes (my vote for album of the year), Gang Gang Dance (Liz Bougatsos, I love you. Call me!), M83, School of Seven Bells, Phosphorescent, Deerhunter, Bon Iver, Lavender Diamond and old: Cocteau Twins (Elizabeth Fraser, you are speaking my language), The Go-Betweens (listen to Cattle and Cane, it will BLOW YOUR MIND), Billy Bragg, Smog, Kate Bush, and of course, The Cranberries.

What’s your Favorite ATL food?
Thai food - Little Bangkok holds the key to my heart! I also frequent Eats, El Myr, Ria’s, Taqueria del Sol and I just ate Burger Win for the first time and it was dreamy!

What’s your Favorite ATL hangout?
I am probably paying at least one employee’s bills at the Earl. You can also find me spending ridiculous amounts of money at Young Blood, seeing art at Beep Beep, having a shawty at El Bar, drinking beer at Manuel’s Tavern or my new favorite place, The Bookhouse.  I also like The Independent because they have scrabble but I don’t go there nearly often enough.

What are your Pet Peeves?
Artists who bring in their work late and/or not ready to hang.  Seriously people, get it together!

Shout outs?
Raymond Carr (I miss you boo!), Mike Germon and Rebecca White (my righthand man and woman), Stephanie Dowda and John Paul Floyd of Click Clique, Emilee Heath and Justin Weaver of My Mom’s Basement, Jillian Fratkin, Chris Nalesnik, Damian Dunn and Derek Mize of Sideshow Improv, Serious Ron, Chelsea Raflo of Artrelish, Chris Appleton and Witt Wisebram of WonderRoot, Genna Saloff, Lee Summers, JTrav and the Sealions, Ross Martin, Ashley Anderson, Victoria Warren, MINT’s interns Emily Luke, Phil Jones (aka Dogbite) and Chris Richardson, the ladies of the Coathangers, Steve Rauber, Matthew Manning, Kelly Teasley and Maggie White of Young Blood, James McConnell and Mark Basehore of Beep Beep, Jeremy Abernathy and Ben Grad at Burn Away, Tessa Horehled at Drive a Faster Car, my old WRAS friends and last but definitely not least, my mom and my dad and the rest of my amazing family.

Special Delivery: The Joneses

December 1st, 2008 by Larry

Our good friends at The Joneses were thoughtful enough to send us a box of goodies for the holidays. I’ve personally been a fan of the maroon J hat for a long time and I’m happy to be wearing it as I write this entry. I like The Joneses’ bold statements with the use of simple graphics throughout their line. Definitely a quality product from good people. Big shout out to Aaron and the rest of the crew in Charlotte, Atlanta, & Chicago.

Set It Off: SeriousRon™

November 26th, 2008 by Larry

Name:
Ron Lewis

Aka:
SeriousRon™

Website:
www.seriousron.com

Where are you from?
I was born on a cigarette boat going 90 mph through the Gulf of Mexico. My parents had gotten caught up in a little mess with some gentlemen from Panama, so those first few years were a bit crazy. Funny story about that, actually. When news of that boat incident hit the papers, (producer) Michael Mann had just finished working on Starsky and Hutch. Five days later he was pitching the pilot for Miami Vice to the major networks. Coincidence?  Who knows…

Who do you work for?
Simply put, I work for beauty. I’m a slave to her, really. She’s a relentless mistress, and she’ll haunt me to my death bed. Also, I work for Turner Broadcasting Co.

What are your Current Project(s)?
I just finished up a series of oil paintings that I call Lions and Tigers and Ladies, Oh My!. What I did was to take a lady from each of the seven continents and kind of morph her into a cat from that area. For instance, for South America, I did a lady who is half-puma. I ran into a bit of trouble when I got to Antarctica. Turns out there aren’t any big cats or ladies there, so I did a sort of snow-woman who’s morphed into a fur seal. That one actually turned out really sexy.

Who would you love to work with?
Kenny Loggins, hands down. You already know the man can turn out some wicked collaboration work after Loggins & Messina, but I want to take his sound into the visual arena. I’ve already got a title for the tour, actually… Lazer Ball.

If you had to give all your sneakers away to charity except for one pair, which ones would you keep?
Honestly, the Salvation Army can take all my sneakers. Just don’t touch my roller skates! I put an easy 300 miles on those things in ‘86 alone. They’re a part of me.

What’s on your iPod right now?
iPod?

What’s your Favorite ATL food?
You can catch me at Alfredo’s or Nino’s off Cheshire Bridge pretty much any night of the week. It’s just so convenient to the city’s best party spots. I really love the .99 breakfast at Ikea as well. That place has a Euro-vibe that just won’t quit.

What’s your Favorite ATL hangout?
My pad. I’ve got a leapord skin couch that makes you feels like you’re swimming in butter every time you lay on it. But if I’m going out for a cocktail, you’ll probably find me at Trader Vic’s. Classy joint, and their Mai Tai is like a magical key that unlocks the door to Sexy Town.

What are your Pet Peeves?
These “punk rockers”. Take a bath and try on a sport coat, for crying out loud. Am I right?

Shout outs?
Jon and Amy Atteberry, Bill Bounds, Sabrina Wood Llenza, Fredo Aponte, Allison Brennan, Erin Rosintoski, Lindsey “POW” Wagner, Erica Jamison at Mint Gallery, Demun Jones, Hans Gruber (aka Hano Leathers), Andrew Hughes, Franco Roberts, Jtrav, Travis Pitts, Kevin Marshall, AtticaSound, Rehab, Standard, GoAPE Clothing, ArtHouse Co-OP, Atlanta Pecha Kucha, WonderRoot, Brunks on Dikes, No Brakes, Amanda “pure heat” Lauterhaus, The TGG Crew, The Twitter Posse, Black Rock Collective, Octane Coffee, Miami, Huey Lewis and the News, Trader Vic, EC I love you.

Pecha Kucha - We Are The Process

November 25th, 2008 by Larry

About 2 months ago, Georgios and I participated in the Atlanta version of a speaker series called Pecha Kucha. The funny name is derived from a Japanese term for the sound of conversation (”chit-chat”).

The key to Pecha Kucha is the simple formula: 20 slides for 20 seconds each. Each invited speaker has the spotlight for 6 minutes 40 seconds to share and show off their work before the program moves on to the next presentation.

This was the first time I had done any public speaking since I presented my design school portfolio upon graduation, so it might be a little shaky, but it’s worth a listen if you are interested in how our house brand, PROCESS, came to life.

Download from iTunes: PROCESS Pecha Kucha Podcast

Thanks to Fredo and Sabir from Atlanta Pecha Kucha for inviting us to tell our story!

Standard Lenox Square Store Preview

November 20th, 2008 by Larry

The cat’s out of the bag! The hush-hush project we’ve been working on for the past month is revealed. We’ve been helping Standard get their store ready for their big opening which is today. EC was enlisted to hand-paint their wall murals (inspired by Lichtenstein) on the store’s interior and we’ve also spent time helping with odds and ends to get the store up and running. This is one of my favorite projects we’ve done this past year and definitely another great 3D space to add to the portfolio. Thanks to the Standard family for choosing EC for their top-notch project.

Last night Standard Lenox Square had a special store preview for friends and family. Check out those photos after the jump. Oh, and we’ll post some “making of” photos in the next few days. For now, let’s enjoy the finished product…
