THE WALL @ LE FLASH

October 26th, 2008 by Ted

thewall.jpg

Friday night at 7pm marked the start of LE FLASH in Castleberry Hill. Although some light precipitation moved into the city, attendance was considerably high. During my time attending LE FLASH, I grabbed some photos of people interacting with the installation of THE WALL from both inside and street-side of Art House Gallery. The external experience of THE WALL is the ultimate use of the concept, as it is from the vantage point of the sidewalk that it becomes a public community billboard. THE WALL had its night of glory, and from the looks of the image archive, got quite a bit of use. It’s great to see this idea come to life!

Some other interesting installations and street performances can be seen after the jump. Thanks again to Steve and Shane at Art House Co-op for being hosts to THE WALL for the night. If anyone would like to be hosts of your own version of THE WALL, let us know!

Muffy Mommy - Dopeboy

October 23rd, 2008 by Larry

From the producer who brought you Lil Wayne’s A Milli - Bangladesh’s new artist Muffy Mommy hits you with her new single, DopeBoy. I feel like the overall concept of this song is a similar effort to Estelle’s American Boy except it’s an ATL girl singing about how she is in love with dudes with fresh sneakers from the mall. Very deep stuff. At the very least, it’s original, local, and not another M.I.A. rip-off.

Ponderosa - Girl I’ve Ever Seen

October 22nd, 2008 by Larry

I was recently lucky enough to receive a copy of Ponderosa’s newest album to preview. All I have to say is it’s great to know that there’s a band from Atlanta that is holding down the rock and roll scene with some class and authenticity. The track I’m posting is one of their slower/softer songs, but the breakdown in the middle that slowly builds back up is really one of the best uses of musical rests that I’ve heard in ages.

I know you can pick up their EP, and possibly this new album at their next show in town at the Star Bar on Saturday, November 1st. Do yourself a favor and go see Ponderosa.

THE WALL at Art House Gallery this Friday

October 21st, 2008 by Ted

thewall2.jpg

A revised version of my technology mash-up project called THE WALL will be installed at Art House Gallery @ 309 Peters Street this Friday October 24, 2008. It is part of a nighttime event called LE FLASH, a night of light taking place in Castleberry Hill consisting of over 30 installations, street performances, and exhibitions using electricity, light, and sound. It promises to be a sight for the eyes.

THE WALL is more than an electronic billboard, it is a social tool. It combines multiple existing technologies to put the power of large-scale public imagery into the hands of the local community. With it, a neighborhood can instantly share user-defined content with each other in order to communicate, inspire, and build a sense of community.

Email a photo from phone or computer to [email protected] Your photo will appear on THE WALL within 20 seconds

Visit http://thewall.arthousecoop.com to see THE WALL for yourself. Click the THE WALL icon to view the archive of all past submissions. As always, submissions are anonymous but fill-in the email’s Subject line to identify yourself. For more info, contact [email protected]

October 19th, 2008 by Larry

Georgios and I were lucky to score some press credentials to the Rehab show at the Tabernacle this weekend. One of the opening acts was none other than hip-hop legends, 8 Ball & MJG. I was able to snap a few decent photos from the evening that I’ll post really soon. But first, here’s one of the tracks 8 Ball & MJG rocked with a live band!

Photo Friday: ATL Celebrates Photography

October 17th, 2008 by Ross

So I have to admit.  I’ve been super busy this past week!  Not only mourning the Cowboys loss on Sunday (don’t worry Larry, its only one game) but being busy in general with work.  Just to give you peoples out there a little insight, I work as a freelance photo assistant on a full time basis.  It is an awesome job and I get to see something new almost ever week.

But that’s not what I’m here to talk about this week.  This week I want to fill everyone out there in on a pretty big even going on here in Atlanta right now.  This October marks the 10th annual Atlanta Celebrates Photography Festival.  I seriously can’t tell everyone out there how awesome it is to have something like this at your fingertips, especially if your passionate about photography.  Last year Alec Soth rolled thru and gave a pretty amazing (and FREE) presentation at the High Museum. I would highly recommend everyone who is reading this now to watch this little video of Soth before his speech last year and if you like it then take the time to check out the schedule and go to some of the events they have coming up.  Not only are most of the events pretty quality but almost all of them are FREE!

Set It Off: Rebecca Serna

October 14th, 2008 by Larry

Name:
Rebecca Serna

Aka:
RCSW

Website:
www.atlantabike.org

Where are you from?
Born in Lexington Kentucky but have lived here since I was a year old (or, what passes for native in Atlanta)

Who do you work for?
The Atlanta Bicycle Campaign

What are your Current Project(s)?
A Bike Valet parking service available for Atlanta’s many festivals and other great events; Bike Buddies on request (learn to ride more confidently with help from our experienced mentors); Confident City Cycling classes that teach people to ride safely, legally, and assertively on Atlanta streets and trails.

Who would you love to work with?
Everyone in Atlanta from the grassroots to elected officials to make our city a happier, healthier, wealthier place to live…through the bicycle!

If you had to give all your bikes away to charity except for one, which one would you keep?
My Miyata 100 LT - it’s an older Japanese touring bike with biopace rings intact and I love it!  I’m going to spend my maternity leave fixing it up.

What’s on your iPod right now?
My ipod broke about a year ago, which is good because I’m not tempted to listen to it while I’m riding. But right now I’m listening to the Gnarls Barkley and HEM.

What’s your Favorite ATL food?
The vegan Caribbean place downstairs from our offices, Calabash.  Vegan BBQ and mac’n'cheez, yum!

What’s your Favorite ATL hangout?
Tilt Coffee Shop in Castleberry and the Cascade Springs nature preserve. I also spend an inordinate amount of time at the Goodwill in the West End.

What are your Pet Peeves?
Hmm…the term “pet peeves” really bugs me.

Shout outs?
All the energy at the college level for better biking - students starting bike sharing at Georgia Tech, organizing a bicycle advocacy club at Georgia State, and Bike Emory getting people out of their cars and bicycling around campus. I’m inspired to think the next generation of Atlanta graduations won’t get stuck in pattern of thinking they have to buy cars to live happily and well in the city after they graduate

Chester French In-Store @ Standard

October 7th, 2008 by Larry

We just got back from Chester French’s in-store performance at Standard. They’re in Atlanta for their second time ever to rock the stage with N.E.R.D., Common, and Janelle Monae tomorrow night at the Tabernacle. Their first visit was spent at Jermaine Dupri’s studio and Magic City, as they mentioned during their acoustic performance tonight. Thanks to Ross Martin of EC for taking photos tonight. If you want to see the rest of the batch, head over to Standard’s blog. But first, check out their new single, She Loves Everybody.

Vote Early

October 6th, 2008 by Ted

2.jpg

This photo was taken in the voting office at 141 Pryor Street in downtown Atlanta this afternoon, as I waited to cast my first-ever vote for an elected official in the United States. It couldn’t have been more satisfying. Well, actually, I was expecting to use a stylus and punch paper ‘chads’ out of a voting card, but these days its all done through fancy touchscreen terminals. Despite ‘tapping’ in my vote, the buzz in the room was inspiring. It’s clear, people want change.

In any case, Georgios was able to drop off all the forms of voters who registered at our EL BAR Registration Night event last week. Those folks will be set to vote on the November 4th national election day. Viva la vote!

Thanks to Zach Wolfe for emailing this photo over.

I “like it a lot” that Bubba Sparxxx is a fan of PROCESS. It is inspiring to know that our graphics have resonated with some of the Dirty South’s best. Here’s a small taste of what’s to come on Bubba’s new album, The Impolite Gentleman, coming out in early 2009.

Atlanta Lives

October 4th, 2008 by Ted

img_3356.jpg

After a week of concern about the state of the country, this morning was spent enjoying the hopeful local life of Atlanta’s downtown area on foot.

It began with a morning walk to my new favorite local coffee joint, Tilt in Castleberry Hill, across the bridge from our Mitchell Street studio. After a series of random happenstances, including heading to an ATM in Five Point for some cash, I stumbled upon some friendly people downtown along Auburn Ave. heading to the Sweet Auburn Heritage Festival. Music, food, crafts, and local folk abound. There was also a large presence of Obama merchandise and Voters Registration volunteers.

After talking with one of the registration volunteers, I learned that although she had only registered 1 person by that point during the day, everyone else she had talked to had already been registered. It was to those individuals, and everyone else reading this, that this worker encouraged to vote early. That’s right, you can vote early and avoid the long lines on election day! Head down to the third floor of the Fulton County Government building at 141 Pryor Street to vote early and/or register (and come back the next day to vote) if you haven’t already. More photos of my day after the jump, including a GIANT chess game at Five Point’s Woodruff Park, an impromptu photoshoot on Auburn Ave. with models, and some graffiti. Downtown Atlanta lives today.

Voter Registration Night at El Bar [Photos]

October 3rd, 2008 by Larry

It was great to see people enthusiastically registering to vote! People came out to discuss the Vice Presidential Debate and dance the night away. Here’s the unofficial “song of the night” as deemed by DJ Cristo Disco:

Voter Registration Night at El Bar [10.2.08]

October 2nd, 2008 by Larry

save_the_usa.jpg
Click image to view large flyer.

Lately, everyone I’ve spoken to has been upset with the state of our country. Gas crises, the Dow plummeting, and banks calling it quits should be enough to scare any American. I’ll admit that I feel helpless and fearful of what’s to come. However, I’m not just going to sit around and complain while playing video games and eating Chik-Fil-A (that’s so last century). I’m afraid that too many young people would rather sit on their laurels and bitch than taking action. I’d like to be proven wrong…

After talking to Ted and Georgios for a week or so, we’ve decided to get together with our friends with El Bar, Standard, Streetlocal, Decatur Dan & Thoughtmaker to organize a Voter Registration Night at El Bar this Thursday [10.2.08]. Enough of us feel the urgency to incite people to fulfill their civil duty by voting for our next President. Here is your chance to do something!

***If this is your first time voting in Georgia, you need to bring a photocopy of your ID to register***

We’ll kick it off around 10:45pm on Thursday. We’ll have the registration forms ready to rock and DJ Cristo Disco will keep us entertained into the night.

Set It Off: Kevin Byrd

September 30th, 2008 by Larry

Name:
Kevin Byrd, Jr.

Aka:
BYRDHOUSE

Website:
http://kevinbyrd.com
http://byrdhouse.com

Where are you from?
Charleston, SC.

Who do you work for?
Armchair Media

What are your Current Project(s)?
We’re working on something top secret with Fusion Brands right now. We just launched the site not too long ago.

I’m working on fabricating a few NOT-A-CLOCKs this month too. It’s a light display for 35mm slides. I’m hoping to do an artist series with them.

There’s also a project Im doing called ”The people I work with, Everyday.” It’s for a group show in Castleberry Hill this month based around the theme of fashion. I’m documenting Farbod’s and Marta’s (and possibly Stefan’s) fashion choices each day at Armchair. I’m then printing those out with that new polaroid printer pogo. It makes 2×3 inch prints. Im adding one each day of the show. The piece is finished once the show ends. It runs Oct 2-Oct. 22nd at the granite room. Sorry for the plug.

Other recent projects include a Chicken and Waffles book, a painting of my dog Gigi, and a halloween costume, rough mock-ups seen here.

Who would you love to work with?
I’m loving who I’m working with at Armchair. I love working with my brothers. I think generally, modern dance choreographers would be really great to work with. I’m really in awe of these people. Their kinetic and spacial intelligence is like WOW, man. I took some modern dance classes for a while. I was like that sweaty 6′4″ guy in the back of the room. I was terrible. Ultimately I knew it was time for me to leave when the instructor wouldn’t help me arrange a solo recital.

If you had to give all your sneakers away to charity except for one pair, which ones would you keep?
I only have one pair of sneakers. This makes me question my quantifications for being an interviewee.  Was I suppose to have as a sneaker obsession? I think if I were to choose I’d have to say those, because it’s my only choice. They are Tretorns.

What’s on your iPod right now?
Oh man. I’m working on a new CHIRP for this coming month, so I’m on a pretty heavy diet of new music. Its funny how quickly you can burn through stuff. The bands I cant get enough of are normally the most recent: Thao, Noze, Panther, TV on the Radio, Annie, Bug, Fujiya & Miyagi, Tussle, Rodriguez, Bon Iver, Epstein y El Conjunto, Takako Minekawa.

What’s your Favorite ATL food?
Chicken and Waffles hell-yo.

What’s your Favorite ATL hangout?
I don’t really hangout. I mostly drive around staring at fixies. I swear Im gonna get into an accident soon if I dont pay better attention to the road.

Which method would you use if attacked by an alligator on land?
a) cover the alligator’s eyes
b) get on the alligator’s back and put downward pressure on the neck
c) bend the alligator’s tail at an upward 45 degree angle
d) try to keep the mouth clamped shut

I would do d).

What are your Pet Peeves?
People who talk to cats and think they really care.

Shout outs?
My wife Florrie and my daughter Annabelle. Also: Aaron and Grayson Byrd, Farbod Kokabi, Stefan K, Marta Czosnowski, Nate Steiner, Drew Dominey, Bernard McCoy, Justin Van Hoy, Gabriel Ricioppo, Will Hays, John Ferguson, Roberto Lange, Mary Stanley, Wade Thompson, Hadi Seyfi, Tak Masuda, Larry and George, Ted Ullrich, Travis Ekmark, Raymond Forbes, Jessica Tillyer, Witt Langstaff, Jorge Menes, Luther Lotz, Matt Hutchinson, John Malone, Lauren Jung, Michelle Haft, Elise Mattingly, Josh Tuminella, Mason Poe. Also, my mamma.
