Thór Stefánsson on Cartoon Network

September 30th, 2008 by Larry

It’s official, Thór Stefánsson, is a local hero. At eight years old, he already has a resume to be reckoned with. He has been a poster boy for flickr, been featured on our website, debuted a solo art show at Octane Coffee, and now he’s going to be on TV. Check out Thor in Cartoon Network’s new bumps for Star Wars: The Clone Wars. He shows up around 0:38 seconds into the video.

Working With The Wall

September 30th, 2008 by Larry

Today, we re-appropriated The Wall to review some logos that Georgios and I have been jamming on for the past few days. Thanks to everyone who has sent in funny, inspiring, and seizure-causing animated GIFs via The Wall. This project has been so fun for us over the past couple months and we’d love you keep it alive by emailing your images to .

Localize Your Life

September 29th, 2008 by Larry

1.jpg

Ted spent his Saturday night surveying the city’s empty gas stations on his bike. He traveled with his camera in hand and took photos of ten different gas stations from the north, south, east, and west. There was no gas to be found.

When asking him about his photos, he said, “If this situation persists, I want people to consider having a plan for their lives. The solution I’m proposing is for people to find a way to localize their lives. Having an independent transportation method, in turn makes the nation independent from relying on foreign nation oil.”

See the rest of Ted’s photos after the jump.

Congrats to El Bar!

September 27th, 2008 by Larry

Congrats to El Bar for winning Critics Pick as Best Dance Club in Creative Loafing! They didn’t have a door guy last night and I was going to be there anyway, so I volunteered to do door duties. As you can see in the photo, they let me arrange the magnetic letters and I kinda geeked out on the letterspacing. Thanks to all the regulars, newbies, and PROCESS crew that came out.

Set It Off: Alfredo Aponte

September 23rd, 2008 by Larry

Name:
Alfredo Aponte

Aka:
Fredo

Website:
Aumneo.com
AtlantaPechaKucha.com

Where are you from?
Family is Puerto Rican yet I have lived mostly in the states now in cities such as Dallas, Atlanta & Savannah.

Who do you work for?
I am a contract designer with a focus in industrial design. I log many hours at EchoViz and bounce back and forth with Think Interactive. My goal is to bring fluidity into one’s environment through user experience and product development.

What are your Current Project(s)?
Currently, I am about to begin editing the speakers of Atlanta Pecha Kucha for our podcast. Atlanta Pecha Kucha is all about interaction, inspiration and starting conversations. We just wrapped up volume six and who knows even what to expect in our next volume. I find that exciting in itself. There is just something amazing about the energy, conversation and representation of 20.

I am also working with Chicago Calling on multiple projects for there upcoming festival in October. Chicago Calling features Chicago-based artists collaborating in performances and projects with artists living in other locations — both here in the U.S. and abroad.

Additionally, I am in the process of jumpstarting a new project with friends and even people that I haven’t even met yet called the Field Union. The idea behind the Field Union is to create a unity across the land and seas and let us work on simple, short and wonderful projects. I can’t say too much now but I promise more to come.

Who would you love to work with?
First of all, I am an advocate in collaborative design and I have a passion for discovering new things. I love working with people with a variety of talents and interests. As for who… no one name stands out but I can tell you that I would love to focus more of my time collaborating with people on projects locally and globally that return something to the community.

If you had to give all your sneakers away to charity except for one pair, which ones would you keep?
I will have to say my pair of Puma’s by Miharayasuhiro. I love them, they are simple. Clean. Black with rubber injected laces that is fabricated on top of these hot pink soles.

What’s on your iPod right now?
I like how this question is directed towards iPods, yet it is amazing how that word has become synonymous with digital music. How powerful is that! I recently, been listening to the new TV on the Radio, Beck, Radiohead, Justice and Dungen. I have also been uploading some Ladytron, Hot Chip, Kraftwerk, CPI, Herbert, Studio, Madredeus, Four Tet, Air France, Beirut, The Ecstasy of Saint Theresa and A Sunny Day in Glasgow.

What’s your Favorite ATL food?
Got to say Ria’s Bluebird, Noni’s on Edgewood, Cafe 101, Carver’s for whenever I wish to go into a coma and just thinking about KoolKorner’s closing still brings a tear to my eye. Additionally, my recent added favorite on my list has been The Porter in Little Five.

What’s your Favorite ATL hangout?
I have a passion/addiction for coffee. If I am not working… then I can more likely be found at Octane ordering an espresso, cortado or macchiato. It all depends on who is pulling when I show up.

What are your Pet Peeves?
Half effort! Lack of attention to detail. Pixelated images in presentations and don’t even get me started on the Crappy Georgia Clip Art Peach with Gradient License Plates for example.

Shout outs?
Have to give props to all who have presented at Atlanta Pecha Kucha, the crew at Octane, all my Friends & Family and the artists/designers that seeks to protest, question, and challenge.

Push Bowl Fundraiser

September 20th, 2008 by Georgios

n1303172412_115552_4425.jpg

This past Thursday, Essential2Life held their first ever PUSH Bowl fundraiser. PUSH is an experimental digital library and epicenter to foster and nurture urban youth creativity. E2L created PUSH after learning that inner-city teens want instruction in creative disciplines more than in any other set of skills or job training. After meeting Vince Hungate of E2L over the summer, Larry and I volunteered some of our time to teach less fortunate youth Photoshop. We hope to do it again this fall. If interested in volunteering your time or making a donation, visit Essential2Life.

It was a great event and I had the best team. On my team, the Beer team (we didn’t get to pick our own team name), was Steven Lambert (also a Push instructor) from Indigo Studios, Dowd Keith, Carrie Allen and Fabian Williams of Occasional Superstar. Check out Fabian’s art, especially the Big Boi portrait. Our friends from Matchstic were also there in their fresh track suits and tees. Thanks to Dowd for the photos.

Check out more photos after the jump.

Set It Off: Mike Germon

September 16th, 2008 by Larry

Name:
Mike Germon

Aka:
I don’t really have any nicknames, stage names, or nom de plumes. Maybe that’s something to work on.

Website(s):
ThoughtMarker.blogspot.com
ThreeBlindMikes.com
MINTGallery.org

Where are you from?
I grew up just outside of Decatur. So with the exception of school in Athens, I’ve live in the A all my life.

Who do you work for?
I work freelance as a filmmaker and designer. I hope to eventually get paid to curate and create art as well.

What are your Current Project(s)?
I’m always busy with ThoughtMarker and helping run MINT Gallery. I’m also trying to pull together a book of drawings by local artists. I’m working on art for a couple of different group shows at Aurora Coffee. I’m working with you guys on an alternate colorway for one of the Process tees. I’m editing a video for Sideshow, a multimedia improv event that goes down Friday nights at Relapse Theater. Then in December, I’m curating a show of my favorite artists of the past year that will take place at WonderRoot.

Who would you love to work with?
Dosa Kim is one local artist who has really stepped it up lately, I hope to somehow work with him soon. As for big names, I’d love to work with Faile, Wes Anderson, The Rza, or Timur Bekmambetov. Look him up, he’s a genius.

If you had to give all your sneakers away to charity except for one pair, which ones would you keep?
I’d like to say my green and orange Nike iD Dunk Lows or my Energy (bright ass orange) Adidas Dragons, but I know that the real answer is my flip flops which I will rock well into the winter.

What’s on your iPod right now?
I’ve been listening to a lot of local stuff lately. Vera Fang, Judi Chicago, Snowden, Mastodon. I also still have a lot of love for bands out of Athens like Iron Hero, The Whigs, Cinemechanica, Pegasuses - XL, A. Armada, Marriage, Pride Parade, and We Versus the Shark. As for national stuff I like The Cool Kids, LCD Soundsystem, Thrice, Bloc Party, TV on the Radio, and of course the Wu-Tang Clan.

What’s your Favorite ATL food?
El Myr, Eats, Fellini’s, La Fonda, all cheap stuff near where I live.

What’s your Favorite ATL hangout?
Beep Beep Gallery and WonderRoot are two spots where you’ll find me often, and I’m starting to really like the Highland Inn Ballroom. But more often then not, I’ll just walk over to Manuel’s Tavern for pitchers of PBR. You’ll also find me catching soccer matches at the Brewhouse.

What are your Pet Peeves?
I could take this opportunity to rip into a bunch of people that annoy me through various actions and stances, but I will not. So I guess people complaining about stuff is one of my pet peeves.

Shout outs?
Chuck McCarthy (ideasbychuck.com) out in LA. Brett W. Thompson (the happiest person in Atlanta). MINT’s intern Phil a.k.a. Dogbite. Vik Singh down in Miami, who I believe has already gotten a few shout outs via Set It Off. Local photographer Bobb Lovett (Bobb with two B’s), who recently showed with me in Mobile, AL and Tracy Young who hooked that up. Everybody holding down the underground art scene in Atlanta: all the kids at Beep Beep, the elusive Evereman, WonderRoot, MINT (and Erica who calls all the shots), Youngblood, Rabbit Hole, Foundation One (RIP), all the art bloggers (Jeremy, Ben, Jonathan, Cinque, etc.), The Atlanta Creatives Project, FALSE Magazine, and The Harold Group (serving up the best chicken wings you’ll find at a house party/art show). Last but not least, soon to be millionaire movie producer, my girlfriend Rebecca.

Big Boi - Dubbz (Ft. Backbone)

September 13th, 2008 by Larry

Big Boi at the Atlanta Ballet

Big Boi’s highly anticipated solo album, Sir Luscious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty is supposedly coming out on October 28th, 2008. The world has been waiting to hear this album for quite some time since the release of the track, Royal Flush, that leaked earlier this year. I’ve heard all kinds of rumors involving various Dungeon Family members being on the record along with local DJs.
Is this the new sound of ATL?

Set It Off: Rachael Spiewak

September 10th, 2008 by Larry

Name:
Rachael Spiewak

Aka:
Lil Ray, Tiny Mixmaster, Wak, Big Mama Spie

Website:
www.sopobikes.org

Where are you from?
Cooper City, FL

Who do you work for?
Sopo Bicycle Cooperative, Atlanta’s nonprofit community bicycle repair shop.

What are your Current Project(s)?
For Sopo, I manage and coordinate day-to-day operations and long term projects, along with a collective of amazing volunteers. The bulk of what I do is taken up with grassroots fundraising (read: throwing fanstatic parties) and caring for the shop and the people in it. Outside of the shop, I’m the resident DJ for the Harold Group, an art collective that throws quarterly theme parties (among other things). I go by Tiny Mixmaster. Here’s a live recording of a recent set. This one’s more indie electro than usual. I usually go for electrofunk, although people go bonkers for new jack swing (Soul II Soul and Bobby Brown take parties to a magical level). I figure, becoming an internationally touring electro DJ is a pretty good way to get out of the nonprofit game when the time comes.

Who would you love to work with?
The current kids at Sopo, 10 years from now. We’re teaching them about cooperation, environmental resonsibility, DIY, and conflict resolution in an unual kind of classroom, and in a place where they choose to be. They’re already cool kids. I bet they’ll be cool adults, too. Plus, they gotta run the bike shop when we all retire and buy yachts with our fat nonprofit paychecks.

If you had to give all your sneakers away to charity except for one pair, which ones would you keep?
The guys at Rare Footage in East Atlanta hooked me up with a pair of red Authentic Vans recently. Ordinarily, I don’t do red, or primary colors really. I’m from South Florida. I like pastels and all things CMYK. Anyway, I’ve never gotten so many shoe compliments…and shoe-related assumptions about my rowdiness. Apparently, red shoes kinda mean something about the person wearing them.

What’s on your iPod right now?
Funny, I don’t have an iPod. But in heavy rotation in Torq, the DJ software I use so I can contain my entire operation inside my messenger bag, are Crystal Castles, Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, the Bloody Beetroots, Shawty Lo, Burial, and Flying Lotus. And I’ve got electrofunk for days. I love the crap out of some local bands and DJs, too. I’ve seen Noot D’Noot about 17 times this year, and at a slightly lesser frequency, I’ve been enjoying Judi Chicago, Black Dominoes, Samadha, Zano Bathroom, Chris Devoe, Batata Doce, and Rev Rebel and the Sound Supreme.

What’s your Favorite ATL food?
Soul Vegetarian’s mac and cheese.  Their yams are excellent, too.

What’s your Favorite ATL hangout?
When I’m not at the Sopo shop, I’m probably at Aurora L5P or Wonderroot. I’ve been digging the Highland Ballroom lately.

What are your Pet Peeves?
Aggro drivers, bicycles on the sidewalk, using the word “ghetto” to negatively refer to something as low budget (as if low budget = bad anyway), using the word “retarded” to refer to something as unsatisfactory, lazy DJs, and waiting on lines.

Shout outs?
Here’s some love for the entire Sopo community, the Harold Group, Ryan James, Black Dominoes, Sammy Parker, Studio Disco, Hollypop, all of my weirdo bike touring couch surfers who remind me that bikes are about fun, Lil Andy, and DIY’ers everywhere. Big ups to all my haters.

Set It Off: King Screen

September 2nd, 2008 by Larry

Name:
Scott J. Garnett, David M. Zinser

Aka:
Scott: Tester (to those in the Ragga Jungle / Drum n Bass community)

Website:
http://www.kingscreen.com

Where are you from?
Scott: I am originally from Roanoke, VA and moved to Atlanta in 2000.

David: Southern California originally, both Orange & Los Angeles counties.  But I’ve lived all over: Huntington Beach, Brooklyn, now Atlanta.  I’m a bit of a geographic mutt.

Who do you work for?
Scott: Myself. I co-own and operate King Screen and also run two Ragga Jungle / Drum n Bass record labels called Soundtest Records and Big Tune Records. I also have a Ragga Jungle/Reggae Soundsystem called Trilogy Sound.

David: Myself. As contract printers we invariably work for our clients, but at the end of the day, we decide what time the shop opens and closes.

What are your Current Project(s)?
Scott/David: Expanding the shop with additional equipment to increase our production capacity so as to better juggle multiple projects simultaneously.

Scott: Music-wise, I have two new vinyl releases coming out over the next few months as well as my bi-annual overseas tour.

Who would you love to work with?
Scott: More artists and musicians. Although, I do enjoy working with people who are clueless. It’s rewarding to see the process of mere concept to reality. Of course, there’s definitely something to be said for those with print ready vector artwork.

David: As many DIY creative (un)professionals as Atlanta has to offer. Given the chance I’d love to collaborate with B+, he’d come with the photos and I, the words.

If you had to give all your sneakers away to charity except for one pair, which ones would you keep?
Scott: Lately, I’ve been buying a lot of shoes. I don’t know why really. I wear the same pair everyday. I have about a half dozen pairs of shoes I’ve never even worn. They probably would be better off donated to charity. I’ll hang on to my Emerica Transists, black on black. I’m a simple kind of guy.

David: Not in the sneaker game and never want to be.

What’s on your iPod right now?
Scott: How many urban cool points do I lose if I confess to not owning an iPod? My Blackberry has a built-in MP3 player, if that counts. At the moment, it’s filled with classic foundation reggae the likes of Johnny Osbourne and Barrington Levy plus Sentinel’s World Clash mix, Lupe Fiasco, Milosh and my guilty pleasure, Alicia Keys. I try to keep a nice rotation.

David: The Swing Kids discography, Skream, Scuba and Burial.  And of course, Tears for Fears.

What’s your Favorite ATL food?
Scott: Calabash Vegetarian Kitchen on our block of Mitchell St. All vegan, independently owned and operated. Caribbean inspired cuisine. BBQ tofu, Mac-NO-Cheese, Curry Soy Chunks, Greens and Cabbage… I can’t get enough. Of course, convenience of location gives them a big advantage. I still have love for Soul Vegetarian and you can’t pass up a 3AM run to Chinese Buddah.

David: My girlfriend and her roommate are known to whip up some insane biscuits & gravy, cold soba, pies and cupcakes; but if I’m going out, then I’m getting sandwiches at Octane, 5th Earl or Alon’s.  Otherwise, it’s always Taqueria del Sol.

What’s your Favorite ATL hangout?
Scott: I spend the majority of my time on my own block. Of course, there are inevitable Zipcar runs to Whole Foods for vegan chocolate chip cookies and Limeade.

David: It’s a toss-up between Mitchell Street and the MLK Natatorium.  If there was a lap-pool on my block, I’d never leave.

What are your Pet Peeves?
Scott: Ultra low-resolution, full-color GIFs embedded in Word documents. Also, loud eaters and open mouth breathers.

David: Ultra low-resolution, full-color JPEGs embedded in Word documents.  And the fact that there’s no hardcore in the city of Atlanta.

Shout outs?
Scott: My Mother and Father, Jason and Laura. And LionDub.

David: Derek at Urban Medium, Goldi at Jungle.45, Mayhem at 404audio, and all Process and Epidemik Coalition crew.

Sergio Mendes | Jay Z | Wajeed | Nas | Dj Premier | Large Professor

If you had to give all your sneakers away to charity except for one pair, which ones would you keep?
WOW!!! Thats a great question! Hmmmm If I could only keep one pair, I would stick with the Nike Air Trainers in Knicks Colors. A) Nike Air Trainers are the most Comfortable shoes EVER, at least in my opinion. B) Orange and Blue are my favorite colors just check my Blog to see for yourself.

What’s on your iPod right now?
Creative Control Radio Show. It’s the radio show that I co-host along with Dj Grandman. Grand always comes with the exclusives. With both our music industry connects, we get a lot of exclusives from Hip Hop artists.

Right now I’m listening to: The AOK Crew from New York: Homebody Sandman, Fresh Daily, P Casso, as well as J Live, Estelle, Ice Cube, Killer Mike, Gnarls Barkley, Tanya Morgan, and Janelle Monae.

What’s your Favorite ATL food?
Hmmmmm no Diss, but ATL doesn’t really have food that you can call ATL’s! Does It? A lot of people say Soul Food, but you can get Soul Food anywhere. And I’ve actually had the BEST Soul Food up north, not down south.

The Pizza sucks in ATL, and I don’t eat Beef or Pork, so RIBS aren’t really my thing. My favorite type of food is Pasta and I when I want a cheap pasta dish I hit up Little Azio. You def get your moneys worth, and the atmosphere is real clean.

What’s your Favorite ATL hangout?
Back in the day when I first got here it was Lenox Mall - thats where all the girls from Spelman would be hanging out. And you would always see the rappers there (which meant MORE girls were around). I saw Naughty By Nature, Redman, Wu Tang, Jay Z, Nas, Shaq, Outkast, Jermaine Durpi, ETC. But Lenox fell off yeeears ago.

I would say now, nowhere in particular. I don’t hang out as much (don’t really have the time too). Some of the night spots I frequent are MJQ | Django | Apache Cafe | and Cenci.

What are your Pet Peeves?
People calling me always trying to get something, or trying to get in somewhere for free. These same people are NEVER around when you need something. Also hate people who get caught up in the Hype. Like if your walking around with a pair of Questlove Air Force Ones on, I need you to know who Questlove is, at least what group he’s apart of.

Shout outs?
Big Shouts to the brothas who help me run my compnay and Blog. My Brand Manager Chicagorilla | Director of New Media Inori | and my Field Manager OZ B. I couldn’t do anything without these brothas being on point. My DJ, Grandman and music manager Mark Madison. Also shouts out too the other Blogs I check like Frolab, Street Local, Lavish Life, Frank 151, Konsole Kingz, and Binkis’ Blog.

Keep It Real, Will!

August 26th, 2008 by Larry

A good friend of our studio, Will Aquino, is leaving Atlanta for the coasts of Argentina this week. When I first met Will, he was the new kid at Standard. After a brief initiation, he quickly learned to trash-talk with the best of ‘em, such as Decatur “The Hater” Dan. Will has since moved on to managing the Y-3 store in Atlanta, but has decided to follow a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to start over fresh and to take advantage of a few opportunities that await him in South America. He plans to be able to speak Spanish fluently before he comes back in a year (doubt it) and to hunt down some spots where PROCESS can thrive. Will, I think you’ll do just fine. So long for now…

Check out the show cards we made for MINT Gallery’s upcoming art show, reMIXT. If you’re lucky enough to get one of these let us know and we’ll send you a surprise.

reMIXT will also feature a local music raffle where one dollar tickets could win you your choice of music and swag provided by local bands.

There will also be Skids and Tricks Competitions in the bar with $5 PBR pitchers if you ride your bike. Hopefully Sopo Bikes will have their new stickers available at the show. I picked up 2 from Rachael last weekend at Eyedrum, but I really need a few more in my life.
