If you missed out on SWARM: Atlanta Edition last Friday night, you won’t be any of these photos by Hadi. You can, however, see how much fun we had with our Charlotte friends!
Despite it being Memorial Day Weekend, the scene at our studio was bustling with life on Saturday. EC resident photographer, Jorge Menes, was working on set for client, Megan Huntz Dresses. Jorge has worked with Megan on her lookbooks since the beginning of her line several years back. The shots always take my breath away, and I have no doubt that they’ll do the same this time around.
Keep an eye out for a post from Jorge in the coming weeks as he turns the imagery from this weekend into finished lookbook-worthy shots. If we’re lucky, he’ll walk us through the “process”.
Awhile back, we gave you a look in a studio session involving Demun Jones and our in-house photographer, Ross Martin. The reason for that session was the creation for an album cover for his first iTunes single (coming out soon). Our goal was to portray “The Man in Black” with a “Cali” vibe.
Done to Death artists, US Royalty, just recently collaborated with Joseph Pepper from Cartel & Stuart Luptin from The Child Ballads / Jonathan Fire*Eater covering The Rolling Stones “Sweet Virgina.”
I had a chance to catch up with Joseph at El Bar a couple weekends back and he mentioned that the idea for collaborating was very impromptu, yet welcomed. Apparently he hit the studio immediately, recorded the guitar track, and was pleased to hear the final result!
Yesterday, a special package came in the mail from Quintin, a new hat company owned by some of our friends on the west coast. What sets them apart from the norm is that they specialize in fitted 5 panel caps, thus eliminating the need for a pesky adjustable strap and delivering some class to the 5 panel category. Their first wave of releases will take place on May 2nd, kicking off a summer of weekly releases bearing collaborations with many heavy-hitting design teams (the line sheet looks amazing). We’re honored to be included in this succession of releases and are currently tweaking the final details on the first PROCESS x Quintin collaboration set for later this summer. A couple weeks back, our friends from freshiam.net came by our studio with Dosa Kim to discuss the collaboration we did with him for the PROCESS line. It was a completely natural decision for us to reach out to one of our favorite ATL-based artists to contribute to our line. It’s definitely been a popular graphic among our customers. Make sure you snag yours in the PROCESS Online Boutique before they sell out.
You may have seen this skate deck being passed around at the PROCESS launch Party at El Bar on Friday night. Our friend, Josh Tuminella created this custom skate deck as a gift to us. Josh and I had a conversation the other week at the IDSA portfolio review about this new process of designing skate decks that he was working on for his thesis. The more and more he told me about it, the more I became intrigued. So Josh decided to make a board for us in honor of the launch.
Well, you may look at it and say it’s just another laser cut skate deck that you see at art shows. But there is more that meets the eye. What’s so special about this deck is that when you grind on the board, it begins to reveal a hidden secret. Once you grind away the Process logo, it reveals the EC logo underneath.
We still haven’t grinded on the deck or attempted to reveal the EC logo because we love the deck the way it is and also because none of us have skated in years. If we do, you will be the first to know. Any experienced skaters want to help us out?
Josh, hit me up, I have some great ideas. Nokahoma skateboard?
Here’s a glimpse of your boy, Ross Martin, working on a studio session in our downtown ATL digs with the one-and-only, Demun Jones. I’m not allowed to disclose what the project is about yet, but I thought it would be great for everyone to see “Mr. Photo Friday” in action. All I can say is that you best get ready! Stay tuned for more details…
Son & Sons, the creative agency of Wade Thompson in New York, came to me the other week in anticipation of their new site launch. Wade needed help with creating an interactive splash page embodying the attitude of Son & Sons: thoughtful, fun, and innovative.
Using solely my voice in a C-Major chord with an added sixth (C-E-G-A), I brought life to the landscape of ‘refrigerator magnets’ spelling out the Son & Sons mantra. Spell your own and listen to your creation!
Here’s a look inside the PROCESS gift bags from El Bar’s New Years Eve party. Inside you’ve got the new El Bar tee (designed by Georgios of EC & PROCESS where he remixed the logo by Steve Deniro), a sticker pack from The Joneses, a StreetLocal Gentleman comb, the new Frank magazine, Scion socks, and various mixtapes including remixes from ATL’s own, Rob Wonder, Klever, & Treasure Fingers. Not pictured are the 2009 V.I.P./No Cover keychains that were also handed out at the door. Thanks to everyone who came out and made it an extra-special evening!
If you were at El Bar for New Years Eve last night, you may have noticed their new sign hanging behind the bar (designed by Steve Deniro). Here’s how it was made…
Jeremy Abernathy from ArtVoices Magazine conducted a phone interview with me back in October, as his coverage of the LeFlash event in Castleberry Hill. The interview was just published in the December issue of this print-only magazine, which has distribution in New Orleans, Miami, Atlanta, DC, NYC, LA, and Seattle.
The article mentions Epidemik Coalition and an installation called THE WALL which was featured in Art House Gallery the night of the event. For those who remember, THE WALL is a project I designed which accepts user-submitted images via email and throws them up large-scale in a public space to create a sort of live, electronic, community billboard. Your neighbor’s new baby, an absurd situation in the grocery store, your friends clinking their beer glasses: anything you would photo-blog from your cell phone cam is fair-game for this system that publicizes these images in an outdoor setting. (instead of being stuck in a private setting on your home laptop).
Although brief, the article touches on the point of the project and something all of the EC crew is aiming for: using design to build better and stronger places and people. Until I can get my hands on a copy of the printed magazine to have around the studio, click here to link to the full-page scan of the write-up.
Last week while visiting our foosball buddy, Ian McPherson, at Ruin skate shop, we got a sneak preview of his store’s collaboration with skateboarding staple, Spitfire wheels. Kids have been rolling around on Spitfires for ages. I remember when nothing else would suffice. Congrats to Ian on being part of such a skateboarding legacy. Trade in your crappy Xmas gifts for $$ and head over to Ruin for these babies. Available very soon. I’d call and ask about availability: (404) 943-1178
In the spirit of giving, here’s our contribution to New Years Eve at El Bar. Our PROCESS tote bags will be holding new El Bar tees, designed by Georgios of EC/PROCESS, in addition to other gifts from Frank 151, The Joneses, StreetLocal and more.
Remember to pre-pay your $20 for New Years Eve at El Bar. You’ll get one of these “No Cover / V.I.P.” keychains that will allow you to get into El Bar for FREE in 2009. It’s totally worth it! If you can’t make it by the bar in time, you can always email them at and they should be able to work something out with you.
European-based clothing designer and friend of EC, Megan Huntz, stopped by the studio friday for some help with updates to her website. We incorporated some beautiful shots of girls wearing Megan’s handmade dresses taken by EC’s Jorge Menes in Barcelona, Spain this past summer. Megan just wrapped-up with a special holiday clothing sale at Atlanta’s Center for Design Study and is prepping for continued work on her dress line in 2009. Her items are carried in multiple boutiques in Italy and Spain, check her website for more information and store names. Being in the holiday spirit, Megan left sporting an I Bike ATL shirt courtesy of yours truly.
While she was here, I asked Megan if she had any ideas for a conceptual sweatshirt for me. Something I could ride a bike in. I have some ideas and am ready to create. Now just to find someone with a sewing machine state-side…
Here’s a preview of the new El Bar tee that is one of the many reasons you should pre-pay for their New Years Eve party. $20 gets you so many benefits including one of these shirts. Nothing is more ATL than this tee… except for being a Celtic hater. (Don’t pretend like you rep the A and let me see you at Philips Arena cheering for Boston. That’s negative points in my book, you poser!)
Last week I mentioned that you’d be able to become an El Bar V.I.P. and not have to pay a cover during 2009. All you have to do is pre-purchase a $20 ticket to El Bar’s New Years Eve event. There are also many more benefits listed below.
Your $20 Ticket includes:
-Name on Guest List
-El Bar “V.I.P./No Cover” for 2009
-Champagne at Midnight
-New El Bar Tee by PROCESS
-Bag of goodies from sponsors such as StreetLocal, PROCESS, The Joneses, and more… -Also, there will be a Mariachi band, hopefully playing crazy crunk covers…
The presale starts Thursday the 18th of December.
Contact for more information, or come out Thursday night and pay Colleen or Rosa over the bar.
Never pay a cover at El Bar in 2009. There’s a very special opportunity to become an El Bar V.I.P. on the horizon. As always, we’re in the thick of it. Details coming soon.
Epidemik Coalition resident photographer, Jorge Menes, commissioned our former intern/illustrator E. Charrow to draw his holiday cards. I really like how the watercolors interplay with the line art. If you were nice to Jorge this year, you’ll probably get one of these in the mail.
