“Yo Chief, is that a blue dishwashing sponge on your head?”
UNLESS you were born a biter! This is clearly a rip of our skulled-out Chief Nokahoma fitted and it’s soooo busted! Stick with the O.G. PROCESS Nokahoma Fitted unless you like aligning your personal brand with, crusty embroidery, ineffectual design, and other posers. Damn! What a disgrace.
A message to the designer: If you’re not from the A, don’t touch our icons. Jam out some of your weak-ass “noncepts” on the Boston leprechaun.
Thanks to our boy B for the tip.

A couple weeks back, our friends from freshiam.net came by our studio with Dosa Kim to discuss the collaboration we did with him for the PROCESS line. It was a completely natural decision for us to reach out to one of our favorite ATL-based artists to contribute to our line. It’s definitely been a popular graphic among our customers. Make sure you snag yours in the PROCESS Online Boutique before they sell out.

Last Friday, we arrived in Charlotte about 3 hours before the Laced Up show at The Forum with our custom custom PROCESS Chukka boots in hand. Just enough time to drop them off with the show’s coordinators, grab a bite to eat, and get back to the show. Thanks a million to our Queen City friends for showing us around town, giving us the VIP treatment, and for the endless hospitality.
Shout outs: Radar for letting us crash at his pad and for the endless shenanigans (videos will surface on the internet), A.C., Camila with Blu Magazine, Myk with D.M.N., Shane, BLNGxBDGT, Bobby and Niche, Josh and Black Sheep, Ryan O’Malley for the sweet prints and the basement tour of the Davidson College archives, and everyone else we met or forgot to mention.

Part of the our crew will be heading up to Charlotte for tonight’s Laced Up sneaker event at The Forum. We were given this pair of Vans Chukka boots a few weeks back and the first thing we had to do was mask the soles with tape before we sprayed the canvas sneakers with the color we wanted. I don’t want to give away what our custom sneaker looks like, so I’ll leave you with a hint. It was inspired by the Bombera illustration Georgios made for the PROCESS line. If you’re in Charlotte, come out tonight for the big reveal. Everyone else, stay tuned because we’ll have photos from the show and more making-of shots very soon.

You may have seen this skate deck being passed around at the PROCESS launch Party at El Bar on Friday night. Our friend, Josh Tuminella created this custom skate deck as a gift to us. Josh and I had a conversation the other week at the IDSA portfolio review about this new process of designing skate decks that he was working on for his thesis. The more and more he told me about it, the more I became intrigued. So Josh decided to make a board for us in honor of the launch.
Well, you may look at it and say it’s just another laser cut skate deck that you see at art shows. But there is more that meets the eye. What’s so special about this deck is that when you grind on the board, it begins to reveal a hidden secret. Once you grind away the Process logo, it reveals the EC logo underneath.
We still haven’t grinded on the deck or attempted to reveal the EC logo because we love the deck the way it is and also because none of us have skated in years. If we do, you will be the first to know. Any experienced skaters want to help us out?
Josh, hit me up, I have some great ideas. Nokahoma skateboard?

Logan Vickery walking me through one of his concepts.
Last Friday Georgios and I participated in a portfolio review for IDSA (Industrial Designers Society of America) at Georgia Tech. We reviewed books and gave feedback to industrial design students from SCAD Savannah and Georgia Tech as working professionals. It was great to see the work from up-and-coming students and it was definitely a first for me, as my Portfolio Center background has accustomed me to being on the other side of the table, receiving feedback. We ran into some of our good friends such as Fredo from Atlanta Pecha Kucha and Kevin Byrd of Armchair Media as well. Thanks to IDSA for having us!

The PROCESS team has been asked to participate in a custom sneaker show called Laced Up in Charlotte next month. Yesterday, an unmarked box containing these white canvas Vans Chukka Boots arrived at our studio downtown.
-Anyone have any ideas what we should do to these puppies?
-Anyone know how to transfer graphics to canvas?
-Anyone want to ride up to QC and party with us the weekend of the 12th?
Leave a comment or .
Stay tuned, as we’ll post “process photos” as soon as we decide on a concept/direction.

Georgios and I have been playing around with the idea of direct to garment printing lately. We’ve found that the printing process is quite fickle, painstaking, and pricey, although the results are usually really nice when done properly. It’s can become as irritable as troubleshooting your ink-jet printer at home. In my honest opinion, it seems that this will be the way of the future for tee printing, but the technology for consistency and efficiency isn’t quite “there” yet. Check out more photos of the PROCESS Iris tee from our direct to garment experiment after the jump.

My latest poster is a redesign of the Mary graphic I created for El Bar. I liked it so much I decided to re-illustrate it as a poster. It’s a 2 color 13″ x 18.5″ screen print. I only printed 20 of these so get your hands on one soon. You can pick yours up in the EC Online Store.

Son & Sons, the creative agency of Wade Thompson in New York, came to me the other week in anticipation of their new site launch. Wade needed help with creating an interactive splash page embodying the attitude of Son & Sons: thoughtful, fun, and innovative.
Using solely my voice in a C-Major chord with an added sixth (C-E-G-A), I brought life to the landscape of ‘refrigerator magnets’ spelling out the Son & Sons mantra. Spell your own and listen to your creation!

A lot a people haven’t met me and don’t know who the hell I am. So for the record, I am the infamous, silent member of the EC crew. I am “the other George” but it’s spelled J-o-r-g-e. I am currently stationed in Stuttgart, Germany, on a little base called Panzer Kaserne. The U.S. acquired this bombed out ‘tank base’ from the 3rd Reich in 1946. Its home to about 120 Marines and is a great place to be. In March 2008, I got word that Marine Corps Headquarters had decided to create a new Marine Component Command to support ongoing missions in Africa. As the weeks went by, my office was tasked with the creation of the new command’s emblem. I thought it would be a great opportunity for EC to show its diversity.
So being the non-designer that I am, I promptly volunteered our boy, Larry Luk, who I worked with closely throughout the process. The first step was briefing Larry on the history U.S. heraldry design. After a few exciting weeks with countless tweaks and revisions with the Chief of Staff, Marine Corps Forces Africa (MARFORAF) had a new mark.
The arrangement of graphic elements and the use of colors all have special significance in the design. For instance, the famous Eagle, Globe, and Anchor had to be present, yet it couldn’t overlap the continent of Africa for political reasons. Also, it was important to incorporate the official Marine colors of Scarlet and Gold.
It was a wonderful experience for EC. This mark will be carried by MARFORAF for many years to come, and will be the symbol for honor, courage, and commitment to the USA and our African partners.
Its not often that one sees the Chinese, Greeks, and the Cubans all working together for the greater good. Here at EC, it’s the norm. While being Cuban can sometimes catch a few laughs from ‘The Birthday Boyz’ on the El Bar dance floor, being a full-time Marine is a bit tougher, yet I’m proud to have had the opportunity to involve my boys in the other very important aspect of my life. Semper Fi!!

In honor of our new president, I’ve been working on a new poster design. I made it in the style of the PROCESS Bombera tee that will be coming out in March and even made a dirty bird presidential seal. Not only is he the first black president but he is also the son of an immigrant. That means a lot to us here at EC since most of us are 1st or 2nd generation immigrants ourselves. It’s the first time in awhile that it felt good to be an American.

We have a new friend posting up at the EC studio in downtown Atlanta. Meet Kevin Blackwell. Kevin and I have been hustling all week to get our screen printing setup going again. Epidemik Coalition is rediscovering our roots from the days of Portfolio Center when we use to print tees and posters out of a walk-in closet at the school. Kevin has an art show coming up, so we’ve been printing with every given opportunity. We’ve got some new supplies and some great ideas. Like always, we’ve made do with what we have. We have converted Ted’s tub into a wash out station (sorry Ted, we’ll try to keep it clean) and are printing on an architect’s table that Uncle Rick gave us. Take a look at the photos of us screen printing after the jump.

For the new year 2009, Future Digital LLC’s website just went live. Epidemik Coalition designed and developed the site for this boutique fashion photography company based in New York City.
This wraps-up the branding project started in the fall which included other elements such as business cards, custom silk-screened DVDs, laser-cut stencils, and more.
Can’t wait to see what 2009 has in-store for these folks!

Name:
Aaron Martell
Website:
thejonesesway.com
Where are you from?
I’m from outside of Chicago originally. I moved back to Chicago six months ago and have been living in Bucktown since then. Come up here and I’ll show you around
Who do you work for?
I won’t bore you with the details of my nine to five. After the day job it’s The Joneses.
What are your Current Project(s)?
I’m mainly focused on The Joneses at the moment. I’m trying to make it into something worth while that people are excited to be a part of. Outside of that, creating the perfect ice cube.
Who would you love to work with?
Wes Anderson, Richard Branson, and the Tumbleweed Tiny House Company
If you had to give all your sneakers away to charity except for one pair, which ones would you keep?
My white vans seem to be the most versatile shoe I own. So the white vans.
What’s on your iPod right now?
Bill Withers, James Brown, David Bowie, Billy Joel, Chromeo, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, and whatever is new on Kitschworth.
What’s your Favorite ATL food?
Highland Bakery
What’s your Favorite ATL hangout?
Standard and El Bar
What are your Pet Peeves?
One of my biggest pet peeves is people with bad manners. One of our tees from this season was a social commentary on the gradual disappearance of manners. I’m by no means an expert so if you notice something let me know.
Shout outs?
Atlanta. I know that’s cliché but without the support from Atlanta in last year or so the Joneses most likely wouldn’t exist. I owe a lot of thanks to many people down there. The city feels like a second home and I’m always excited when I know a new trip is on the horizon. Thanks for making that the case. EC keep up the good work and thanks for letting me be a part of the blog.

Friend of EC and Atlanta-based designer Mick Bailey recently launched his very own online magazine called Commuter Culture Magazine. I caught wind of this school-project-turned-online-masterpiece last month and have been checking it regularly since.
Mick describes the vision behind the online magazine as showcasing people and communities have a unique way of doing what we all deal with everyday: commuting. Whether that manifests itself in reporting on a customized surfer van, a world-class bicycle culture, or a story about national ridership trends on rail lines, this site covers real info. Aside from sporting a great visual design, the attitude and content of the online magazine is both unique for Atlanta and very topical in this woeful post-2008 America. Quality-over-quantity rules here, as each post is written as an article with carefully gathered or custom-designed imagery.
I’m interested to see where this haven for a good attitude towards commuting goes!
