Katy Perry/Young Jeezy - I Kissed A Girl “Put On” Cannon Remix

October 4th, 2008 by Larry

Just when you thought the coast was clear, comes quite possibly the best Katy Perry remix to date. This mash-up comes courtesy of our boy, Decatur Dan, of The Studio Rats website. You’ve got Ross’ favorite girl mashed-up with ATL banger of the year, “Put On” by Young Jeezy. You wouldn’t expect a combination like this but KP’s vocals fit the track unbelievably well thanks to the Mr. Money Machine, Don Cannon.

Chester French - People

October 2nd, 2008 by Larry

Ok, this band is quickly moving into “new favorite band” status for me. It’s cool enough that they draw their influences from the Beatles, Beach Boys, and other greats, but these Harvard boys actually do it well! Their knack for combining modern slang with their talent for creating cross-genre hits is hard to deny. Apparently they turned down a record deal with Kanye West only to sign with Pharrell Williams’ Star Trak label instead! How cool is that? That’s like our company telling Pepsi that we don’t want to do graphic design for a company that sells sugar water and turning around and signing with Coca-Cola.

Chester French don’t have a full length album out yet, but you can check out these two tracks, People & a remix of Jay-Z’s Excuse Me Miss. Let us know what you think by leaving a comment.

If you like what you hear, you should come to their in-store performance at Standard this coming Tuesday [October 7th] at 7pm. They’ll be giving away Limited Edition CDs and other prizes. More details on the event at Standardatl.com. Don’t be late!

Britney Spears - Womanizer (The Teenagers Remix)

October 2nd, 2008 by Larry

By now, many of you guys have probably heard Britney’s new single, Womanizer. Regardless of what you might think of her track, you have to hear The Teenagers remix of the song. It is incredible how they’ve injected so much life into the song. It’s complete with energy, dynamics, and well-done transitions. I’m totally impressed here. It just shows the vast differences between hired vs. inspired producers. The results are polar opposites. The Teenagers remixes are currently favorites on my iPod, laptop, and soon to be in my car (if they ever bring gas back to the city).

Daft Punk - Aer OBAMA (vs. Adam Freeland)

September 30th, 2008 by Larry

Wow, our blogs have been more political than ever this week. It’s really been weighing on us to take action with whatever skills we have. Apparently this trend isn’t just here in America. UK-based DJ and producer, Adam Freeland, decided to remix Daft Punk’s Aerodynamic into a pro-Obama chant. Not often do you see Presidential candidates being endorsed through electronic dance tracks. Looks like the rest of the world is hoping for some change too. Regardless of who you vote for, I think it’s a good for young people to take ownership of our right to choose our leaders. So don’t forget to come out to El Bar on Thursday for Voter Registration Night.

The Nightwatchman - Saint Isabelle

September 30th, 2008 by Larry

Last fall, Jorge and I went to see Tom Morello’s solo project, known as The Nightwatchman, expecting to see face-melting guitar solos as most would expect of Rage Against the Machine’s former axe-murderer. We were caught off guard when he came on stage with an acoustic guitar, did a shot of Jamison, and proceeded to play folk songs.

As you’d expect from Tom Morello, his themes and motivations involve political activism and modern protest. I’m totally cool with that, but sometimes his lyrics are a little over-the-top, similar to those of Rage, but for me the angst-fueled delivery of Zack De La Rocha was more genuine. Morello’s solo project has Dylan, Cash, and Billy Bragg influences and is a perfect soundtrack to a night at the Local or playing Wizard Staff but I wouldn’t take it too seriously. Tom’s already doing that.

Patrick Stump (Fall Out Boy) - Love Lockdown

September 28th, 2008 by Larry

Just when you thought this song’s shelf-life was coming to an end, Patrick Stump turns around and records this cover of Kanye’s Love Lockdown in Garage Band because he couldn’t get to sleep. Although this recording isn’t totally polished, Stump’s delivery gives the song some much needed legs and a new perspective.

Katy Perry - Electric Feel [MGMT Cover]

September 24th, 2008 by Larry

Katy Perry’s cover of MGMT’s Electric Feel takes the popular dance track in a new direction. The song is stripped of most percussion, giving her a chance to show off her real voice. Thus, proving that she can sing without the help of sound engineers or auto-tune technologies.

Personally, I think her decision-making process to cover the song was better than her execution of the actual song. I’m not trying to hate. I’m actually applauding her for making an informed branding decision here. For instance, my punk rock band in high-school, The Dumpkins, covered the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Theme Song because we were hoping people would realize we were young party dudes who loved peanut butter, jelly bean, and ice cream pizza. I know that’s a stupid example, but it gets my point across. In the end, it doesn’t matter how well Katy Perry covers the song. For her, it’s more about being associated with MGMT who’ve been embraced by hipsters and bloggers worldwide.

At the very least, Ross (completely obsessed w/Katy Perry) will have a new song to play in his aunt’s SUV when I help him move this weekend. But that’s only if he’s able to borrow the gas-guzzler on Sunday and if he doesn’t wait a week to check this blog.

Vampire Weekend - Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa (The Teenagers Remix)

September 18th, 2008 by Larry

The truth is out! I listen to Vampire Weekend’s self-titled album secretly when no one else is at work. I played the record for a week straight earlier this year and wore-out it’s welcome around the studio in a major way. Did anyone else get sick of this album really quickly? Thankfully, this remix of Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa is one that can be played around the homies without fear of insults or passive-aggressive comments.

The Teenagers have turned a song full of repetitive jingles into something deeper and more distant. The original melodies have been preserved, only The Teenagers have replaced Vampire Weekend’s prep-school/baroque tendencies (ie: tiny Marc Jacobs boy shorts, suspenders, and unrelenting arpeggios) with some much needed edge (ie: tattered jeans, beer-goggles, and snare drum action).

Big Boi - Dubbz (Ft. Backbone)

September 13th, 2008 by Larry

Big Boi at the Atlanta Ballet

Big Boi’s highly anticipated solo album, Sir Luscious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty is supposedly coming out on October 28th, 2008. The world has been waiting to hear this album for quite some time since the release of the track, Royal Flush, that leaked earlier this year. I’ve heard all kinds of rumors involving various Dungeon Family members being on the record along with local DJs.
Is this the new sound of ATL?

Kanye West - Love Lockdown

September 10th, 2008 by Larry

I was just talking to Georgios about Kanye’s performance of his new track, Love Lockdown, at the MTV VMAs the other night when this track hit my inbox. I’m not sure if this is the final studio version of the song, but it is safe to say that it sounds much better than his actual singing voice (as we were brutalized with this past weekend). This can be attributed to high production value and vocoder action (corny T-Pain voicebox). Like it or not, this is surely the first in a barrage of Kanye-related action that will be imposing itself upon your friends and favorite hang-outs this Fall as his album, 808’s & Heartbreak, is slated for a December 12th release. Get ready to be “over it” in about a week.

Lil Wayne - Rob Wonder Remixes

September 8th, 2008 by Larry

I just spent the last 4 days of my life in San Diego and I have to say that some DJs out there are totally unaware of how to hold it down. Don’t get me wrong, I love reggae and what I like to call “safety hits” (ie: Jackson 5, Amy Winehouse, Kanye, and 311) but four days of that stuff will make anyone miss being in Atlanta.

Attention bogus DJs of the world: Get skills and get schooled. Playing an entire Kanye song and cross-fading to a Jay-Z song doesn’t give you the right to be on stage. Just because you have a computer doesn’t mean you can drop beats. The same rule applies to your friend who has Photoshop on said computer. He can’t design either. I just spent my evening fixing his busted-looking show flyer.

In Atlanta, when our DJs make remixes, they actually re-mix and reinterpret songs. There are a lot of pseudo-turntable chumps that should take a lesson or two from Rob Wonder’s takes on Weezy’s Lollipop and Milli… suitable for P’Tree and Ponce escapades. It’s good to be back at home in the Dirty Dirty.

AC/DC - Rock N Roll Train

September 7th, 2008 by Larry

This one crept in under the radar for me. I heard the other day that AC/DC has recorded their first album in eight years and it’s coming out this October. The album title is Black Ice and the first single is Rock N Roll Train. I love the gang vocals on the chorus and the guitar riff. I wish Angus’ solo was a little longer, but otherwise it is a straightforward rocker which is exactly what you’d expect from the arena rockers. Expect to see this track all over Monday Night Football all season long.

Young Jeezy - I Put On (Remix) (Ft. Jay-Z)

August 27th, 2008 by Larry

If you didn’t know already, Young Jeezy will remind you that his new album, The Recession, is coming out on September 2nd, despite the fact that he’s still taking photos for the album’s liner notes as we speak. That doesn’t leave much time for his label to print and package the album before it comes out. Production people LOVE that!

The best part about this remix is hearing Jay-Z make fun of the T-Pain voice during his cameo, which is also where Kanye’s spot used to be. There are a few other remixes of the track including Kanye’s part, but this is the official version that’s been causing a stir on the airwaves in ATL. Maybe we’ll hear it while we’re out tonight. It’s gonna be crazy!

M83 - Kim & Jessie (Montag Remix)

August 25th, 2008 by Larry

Saturdays = Youth has been one of my favorite albums this year, yet I’ve really been longing to hear a crunk remix of this particular song… but no one will take my idea seriously! The Montag Remix of Kim & Jessie by M83 is probably the best remix we’re going to get for now. It’s actually very headphone-friendly but don’t expect it to be your soundtrack to trashing the ladies bathroom at El Bar.

Can we take a minute to discuss the art direction on this entire campaign? Not only is the photography great but it totally fits in perfectly with the music. I can’t remember the last time I felt so strongly towards the similarities between album art and music. And the typography (titling) makes me happy because they worked with one of my favorite font families, Hoefler Text. Mad respect…

The Virgins - Rich Girls (Daytrotter Session)

August 24th, 2008 by Larry

The Virgins‘ EP (aNYthing records) has been tasting the floorboards of Ross’ car for as long as I can remember. Despite the fact that his ride has been broken into more times than the Falcons have changed QB’s in the last year, it’s like the Atlanta hobos aren’t interested in indie rock. It’s probably because they want to leave the dancing to NYC fashion disasters, or maybe it’s because you can’t go anywhere without hearing this song right now. Here’s a version of their single, Rich Girls, they recorded for a recent daytrotter.com session.

The Streets - Everything Is Borrowed

The Streets (aka Mike Skinner) is constantly on rotation in our studio, whether it be CDs, MP3s, or even vinyl. We’re anxiously awaiting the new album, Everything is Borrowed, slated for release in September of this year. Luckily, we were able to get our hands on the new title track which is not only catchy, but surprisingly positive. This one’s going to be added to the morning routine for sure.

PROCESS Mixtape One by Prince Presto

July 20th, 2008 by Larry

We decided that the PROCESS campaign needed a new sound that would both represent our scene and push the boundaries of the typical “Atlanta Sound”. We enlisted the help of one of Atlanta’s most infamous DJs, Prince Presto, to take care of the dirty work. After showing him the line, and what we were about, he grinded-out a mixtape that fit our aesthetic and attitude.

Head over to the PROCESS blog to download PROCESS Mixtape One by Prince Presto.

If you ever see Prince Presto playing out, tell him “Nice Shirt” but don’t try to make any requests unless you want him to get on the mic and tell everyone you wanted to hear 867-5309.
