Making of: El Bar Tee

December 17th, 2008 by Larry

Here’s a preview of the new El Bar tee that is one of the many reasons you should pre-pay for their New Years Eve party. $20 gets you so many benefits including one of these shirts. Nothing is more ATL than this tee… except for being a Celtic hater. (Don’t pretend like you rep the A and let me see you at Philips Arena cheering for Boston. That’s negative points in my book, you poser!)

Photo Friday: William Eggleston

Hello everyone and welcome once again to another installment of Photo Fridayz! I want to first start out by giving a little bit of notice to everyone out there about the postcard show that is coming up this Saturday night at Mint Gallery here in Atlanta. The show is open to the public and it is recommended that everyone participate! You can present up to 4 pieces up to 4×6 in size. It should be a fun time with good people so everyone should check it out.

This week I wanted to share with you someone who I find a lot of inspiration from. William Eggleston is a photographer from Memphis and is credited with making color photography a legitimate form of art. He was the first person to have a solo color photography show at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and since then has continued to create images up until this day. His images are beautiful in terms of color and composition but are also comprised of the most mundane subject matter. I could go on and on about how amazing I think he is as a photographer and it still really wouldn’t do much justice. If you like what you see in this post I would strongly recommend going out and renting William Eggleston in the Real World. Its one of the better documentaries I have seen in regards to photographers. It gives a very indept and personal look at Eggleston and his process and the steps he has taken over the years to get where he is. Very impressive and well worth the watch.

Zoom Kobe IV Webcast/Photos

Zoom Kobe IV sketches

I just participated in a webcast where Kobe Bryant revealed the new Zoom Kobe IV that claims to be the worlds lightest basketball sneaker weighing in at 11.6 ounces. Surprisingly, it’s a low top sneaker. The sneaker boasts technical details such as Flywire technology in the upper (which was made famous by the Hyperdunk), LunarLite foam in the forefoot, and a Zoom Air unit in the heel.

The sneaker comes out in China on January 1st, 2009 and hits US shelves on the 1st of Febraury. Kobe’s first game in the Zoom Kobe IVs is December 19th against the Miami Heat.

Check out screenshots from the webcast and photos of the sneaker after the jump.

Jamie Hopper Photography Website Launch

December 10th, 2008 by Larry

We just finished the final tweaks on jamiehopper.com. As I mentioned last week, we felt that the great photography should be allowed to speak for itself. Our challenge was to find a way to amplify Jamie’s work while allowing the user experience to be both simple and intuitive.

It’s great that she was so willing to let us do what we do best: taking a design risk knowing we would land our feet. Thank you Jamie for being an amazing client and for bringing us pizza the other day. Everyone loves your site!

Epidemik Coalition Holiday Tee - 2008

We created an extremely limited run of these A Pick Me Up tees for the Holiday Season. Yes, our house brand might be called PROCESS, but that doesn’t mean we’ve strayed from our EC screen-printing roots. Originally, Georgios drew our squid friend for the Breather conference in Decatur earlier this year, but we loved the graphic so much we wanted to share it for the holidays. Pick one up in your size in the Epidemik Coalition Online Store. There are already only a few left.

Yaari.com Identity

December 8th, 2008 by Larry

Yaari.com is a social networking site that connects young people through questions about Indian entertainment media. They came to Epidemk Coalition needing an identity package as well as some web-design consulting. Much of the Yaari.com community is located overseas with dial-up connections, so the challenges posed in the web design process require the site to be lightweight and easy to use while remaining young and vibrant. Now that the logo is done, we’ll start jamming on the look and feel of the site in the coming days.

Epidemik Coalition resident photographer, Jorge Menes, commissioned our former intern/illustrator E. Charrow to draw his holiday cards. I really like how the watercolors interplay with the line art. If you were nice to Jorge this year, you’ll probably get one of these in the mail.

Bear Fight!

Category: Misc., ATL Life, Food & Drink
December 7th, 2008 by Larry

Bear Fight - A drink, of sorts, consisting of two drinks taken one after the other. An Irish Car Bomb and a Jäger Bomb. You simply line them up and take one after the other, wait 5-10 minutes, and then you will know how it has earned it’s name.

This celebratory drink, although not invented by us in Atlanta, has been a favorite of ours lately. I know you’re thinking that we’re crazy, but you really only take on a Bear Fight when you’re looking to get the evening started without delay. Spending the holidays with good friends are perfect for taking on the Bear. The Bear Fights shown above were from a few weeks back in Austin with a crew of friends I hadn’t seen in years.

Next time you see Colleen or Rosa at the EL, tell ‘em we sent you. Be careful!

Photo Friday: Richard Avedon

Category: Photo Friday
December 5th, 2008 by Ross

So for this week I would like to start with a special shout out to one of my best friends, Alex Liebold. I have known Alex for a good bit now and the one thing I know is that this is one of his most favorite times of the year. Perfect example, his Last Christmas dedication website. For those of you who don’t know, Last Christmas was a song done back in the 80’s by Wham!. Alex just started it up again and his current count is up to 331 different versions of the song. Either way I am looking forward to seeing what kind of awesome versions Alex comes up with this year and if there is anyone out there that has a version that he doesn’t have send it to him and add to the list!

Now its on to the photo showcase. This week were gonna take a look at Richard Avedon. Most people out there will be familiar with his work but it is always worth taking a second look at. Avedon started his career as a photographer for the Merchant Marines back in 1942 by taking identification photos of the crewmen. A few years later he was working as an advertising photographer for a department store where he was picked up by Harper’s Bazaar which led to a staff photographer position at Vogue up until the late 80’s. He was most notable for his portraits taken with a large format camera on a white background. Avedon was the best at capturing the most revealing aspects of his subjects weather it was celebrities or the working class in the American west.

I recently came across an article on NPR about the responsibility of a portrait photographer to portray their subject in the right way. It was something that made me think about Avedon and his work and some of the complaints that people have had about him over the years. If anyone wants to hear the article you can find it here. Personally I think that the responsibility lies in the editors hands that chooses to run the photo. The photographer is simply doing what he is hired to do and that is take a photograph. Either way Avedon is a legend no matter what way you look at it.

Check out more of Avedon’s work after the jump. Read more »

Black Friday Air Force 1 Photos + Mixtape

Autographed DJ Clark Kent/Black Friday Air Force 1 shoebox

About a week ago, sneaker fiends in New York, Boston, and Miami were camping out for these Nike Air Force 1’s that they had never even seen before. They were set to release early Friday morning, November 28th a.k.a. Black Friday. The designer of the sneaker, DJ Clark Kent, and Nike kept the sneaker a mystery for weeks, yet people were still hyped on its release.

After combing the internet for photos of the shoes on Friday morning, I was disappointed to see the lack of quality images so I got together with Decatur Dan and we made it happen. Also, word on the street is that these will be dropping in other cities soon. ATLiens, check your usual spots for more info.

Don’t forget to download DJ Clark Kent’s hard-to-find Black Friday Mixtape that he made for the release of the shoe. Note: It’s a large file, so I’ll have to take it down in a few days. Get it while you can!

Lily Allen - I Could Say

Category: Music, MP3
December 3rd, 2008 by Larry

Here’s another track from Lily’s new album, slated to come out on February 9th. I love how the song starts with just piano, allowing for the drum machine to creep in, and how it gets full when the chorus kicks in. I think this album is going to be more genuine and sincere than her first. I’m looking forward to it.
