While at the media-briefing for the announcement of the Zoom Kobe VI “Neighborhood Pack” at The Nike Vault at Staples Center, I noticed this torn paper mural of Kobe Bryant. I’ve been a fan of basketball, art, and design for years and I had never seen this piece before. It’s made of torn pieces of black-and-white printed paper depicting key moments in Kobe’s basketball career. The mural is a permanent fixture at The Nike Vault, but it seems to have received little to no attention thus far.
What’s awesome about this piece is that it is a true study of color and contrast. It reminds me of a roided-out cut-paper-poster I worked on for 9 weeks as a 1st quarter student at Portfolio Center. It was one of the most difficult projects I’d ever worked on, but it taught me so much about working with shading and composition. I wonder what kind of adhesive the artist(s) of the Kobe mural used. It sure as hell wasn’t rubber cement, because that’s what I used on my design school cut-paper poster that is currently falling apart!

Stranger Day’s newest track has me wanting more. Word on the street is that he has a full album ready for our earholes and this is just a taste of what’s to come. Moonwalking on the Sun (Produced by EMYND) features a freshened-up version of The Clash’s London Calling beat which makes for an awesome listen.

When I previously heard that the NBA All Star game was going to be in Kobe Bryant’s backyard (Los Angeles), I knew Nike Basketball would celebrate that event with an array of new product. But I didn’t expect Nike Basketball graphic designer, Erick Goto, to take a whimsical new approach to sneaker design and color blocking. Read more »
As some of you may have already deduced, we are taking our brand We Are the Process to SXSW this year. We will be participating in a new fashion related segment called Style X (prononced: Style By). The creators of Style X recently reached out to me and asked me to write an article about the experiences we’ve had in growing our brand as well as what I was enthused about with our trip to Austin in March. If you’re interested in that sort of thing, check outt the longest article I’ve written since college here.
Ever since my grade school days, I always enjoyed the sound of the cello more than any other instrument I played. It’s really astounding to see so many cellos as the centerpiece of this group in addition to their decision to cover a modern pop song.
Although images of the Air Jordan 2011 have been floating around the internet for a month or so, we’re finally given an official look at the shoe today. Here’s an in-depth interview with the designers of the Air Jordan 2011. As always the newest model in the Air Jordan signature line releases during NBA All-Star Weekend on February 19th.

Atlanta tattoo artist Russ Abbott from Ink & Dagger in Decatur, completed a full sleeve tattoo over a span of three days. His client, Adam Machin a fellow tattooer from the UK, sat for a total of 24hrs of tattooing.
The new Nike Basketball campaign features Kobe Bryant & his new shoe, the Zoom Kobe VI, as well as an array of guest appearances. The “movie” was also a collaborative project with esteemed director Robert Rodriguez. This is the 1st official trailer for the movie campaign, and I’m sure there’s more to come. The release date for the film is February 19th, 2011 during NBA All Star Weekend in Los Angeles.
I picked up my pair of Nike Zoom Kobe VI [Del Sol/Black] on release day from Nice Kicks, in Austin, TX over the holidays. If you’re a sneakerhead living in the US, you should get familiar with Nice Kicks. Located deep in the heart of Austin, TX, they’ve been serving The South for a few years now.
If the name sounds familiar, chances are you’ve probably stumbled upon their website, NiceKicks.com before, or you’re already an avid reader of the site. They manage to run a quality shop and update their world-famous website with up-to-date features multiple times a day. The owner, Matt Halfhill, must have a great team around him. He’s doing it right!
If so, share your story at the Marcus Troy & Nike Sportswear Mavericks microsite. I uploaded my maverick story and was surprised to see it on the site immediately. Maybe every submission is automatically approved, but it’s still pretty cool to see yourself digitally represented among movers and shakers. It seems that Marcus will choose a maverick to win a pair of his Bespoke Air Force 1 sneakers… too bad, bc I already have my own!

This dude Evan Roth just melted my face with his Girl Talk on Girl Talk mashup. This takes Girl Talk’s Night Ripper and beat-matches it with his previous album, All Day. Whaaaa?!?

One of my favorite bands ever, The Dismemberment Plan, has reunited for a brief East Coast tour that I’m sad I will miss. They used to come through Atlanta all the time and my college buddies and I would go to all of their shows in the Southeast. The Plan appeared on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon last night and they’re performance was just like I remembered, only now Travis Morrison has a beard and he mixed up the timing on some of his verses. I’d die for the chance to catch them this weekend in Washington, DC.
Rumor has it that they might be playing at The Roots Picnic. ?uestlove is a fan!
I’m loving the most recent collaboration between Nike Sportswear and New York-based designer Steven Alan. You can dress these sneakers up or wear them in casual situations without thinking twice. Alan’s signature “classic with a twist” aesthetic is applied to 4 classic silhouettes from the Nike archives; the Air Zoom Toki, Air Max Talache Low AC, Air Zoom Lava Dome, and Air Zoom Magma AC.
Alan’s process involved stripping each style down to its basic form, adding premium materials such as suede and canvas, and implementing functional details such as the Dynamic Fit ankle insert found on the Air Zoom Toki model. He finished the collection off by adding urban tones ranging from grey, black and white to caramel, dark cinder, and obsidian.
The Nike Sportswear x Steven Alan collection will be available at Steven Alan locations nationwide and at StevenAlan.com starting January 20, 2011.
I applaud Nike’s openness to allowing designers to redefine classic models in their own aesthetic. Maybe one day they’ll open the vault up to yours truly!

Check out these hipsters gettin’ jiggy with their Photoshop & various Apple programs. This is fun to watch once or twice, but will surely be obsolete once Apple updates their OS. The song is pretty catchy too.
Smith Westerns new album opens with the peppy & optimistic track, Weekend. The musical maturity of this Chicago four-piece causes many casual listeners to assume they’re an older group; yet they range between 18-20 years old. Imagine if everyone’s skills were realized before they were legally allowed to drink! I know I’d be thankful to have a few productive years from my teens back!

Here’s and awesome cover of Stevie Nicks’ Wild Heart by U.S. Royalty. I can’t wait to catch U.S. Royalty in Austin (hopefully) during SXSW. They are currently one of my favorite bands.

Our friends at Centre in Dallas have recently released a New Era fitted cap for their store. Also, it’s just as cool to know that Michael Crabtree of Texas Tech/San Francisco 49ers fame is a shopper at Centre. Perhaps he picked up some Process gear?
NBA players on 26 teams in 13 different games will wear specially designed Black & Gold sneakers on Martin Luther King Day 2011. Keep an eye out for them on the feet of Nike, Jordan, & Converse players as you watch the games today. We’ve previously seen Black History Month collections from Nike, but they’ve been notoriously hard to score. As a first, some BHM products will be available for purchase at select retailers. More information on Release Dates, On Court Celebration Kicks, & the BHM Collection is available after the jump: Read more »
