Mums FP - Cool Like

May 12th, 2009 by Larry

mums_fp.jpg

Mums FP’s manager just sent this track over. Apparently it was recorded in 2007, but will finally be released with a mixtape titled, Mr. 4th Quarter, on May 15th. If the rest of the tape has a groove like this track, then we’re in business!

Photo Friday: Peter Yang

May 8th, 2009 by Ross

x_obama2.jpg

This week I helped out Morel Studio Support for a couple of days and got to work with my friend Bobby. He was telling me about how he got to assist for Peter Yang on the last cover of Rolling Stone with Lil Wayne. I remember seeing that particular image for the first time and how impressed I was with it. Really there isn’t anything to the image that blows me away as far as lighting and concept is concerned and I think thats why I love it. Everyone knows who Lil Wayne is but to see such a simple picture of him I think is such a great contrast to what we’re used to seeing on his album covers or hearing in his lyrics. Just another fine example of simplistic lightinig and how effective it can be and even an awesome success story. Yang is about 30 years old and started shooting for a newspaper in Austin, TX about 10 years ago and now he’s shooting covers for Rolling Stone. I wonder what he’s gonna end up shooting another 10 years from now? If you want to read more about his approach to another assignment you can check out an awesome article here (its kind of photo nerdish but still an awesome read).

Fugees Family Featured on CNN

May 7th, 2009 by Larry

.
The other day I was sitting through a layover in the Tokyo Narita Airport in Japan when I looked up from playing NBA Live to see a familiar face on CNN. Coach Luma Mufleh and the Fugees Family were being featured on a special about Africa and I was excited for that kind of global exposure for their organization. I wanted to stand up in the middle of the airport and exclaim, “I know her, we worked together!” The website that EC created for them is shown several times in the feature as well. I was floored.

AC/DC - Shook Me All Night Long (DJ Slink Mix)

May 5th, 2009 by Larry

three6mafia_acdc.jpg

This remix is very straightforward and that’s why I love it. DJ Slink takes a classic AC/DC track and peppers in just enough Three6Mafia to make the track interesting. I heard one of the resident DJs at El Bar play this a couple weeks back, but I can’t remember who it was. Regardless, I’m looking forward to hearing it again at loud-as-hell volume. Perhaps someone will play it for me tonight, if I can make it back to the A in time to see Rob Wonder and Cristo Disco for their Cinco de Mayo party.

Atlanta Hawks Alternate Uniforms???

May 3rd, 2009 by Larry

atlanta_hawks_alternate_jersey_2009.jpg
Does anyone know someone that works at Atlanta Spirit?

Firstly, Congrats to the Atlanta Hawks for their first playoff series victory in 10 years! It’s been amazing to watch the process of transforming the worst team in the league to one of the most exciting teams to watch.

While I was poking around on some sports uniform/logo blogs earlier today (yes, I totally nerd-out on sports aesthetics) it dawned on me how the late 2007 rebrand of the Atlanta Hawks didn’t include an alternate uniform. Also, they eliminated using Yellow (which had been a team color since ‘72), downplayed the use of Red, and introduced Navy Blue and Silver as team colors. Currently, they wear predominantly White uniforms at home and Navy Blue uniforms on the road. I’ve included a Hawks uniform timeline PDF here.

Since there is no current Hawks alternate uniform, I quickly comped an idea onto a Josh Smith photo from their 2007-2008 campaign; using Red as the predominant color and the ATL city abbreviation. I’m not sure if there is a possibility for Hawks management to introduce a new alternate uniform for next season, but now would be a great time in Hawks history to do so. ATL pride is high, David Stern could make more money, and I’d definitely spend my hard earned cheese on a Red-Alternate Zaza Pachulia jersey!

DJ Slugger - Stay Gutter Mixtape

May 2nd, 2009 by Larry

slugger_stay_gutter.jpg

DJ Slugger’s new mixtape, Keep It Hood The Sequel: Stay Gutter stays true to his grime-time roots. Really great stuff. I’ve been bumping on the streets of HK for about a week now. It’s the least I can do to feel like I’m home.

Photo Friday: Tim Barber

May 1st, 2009 by Ross

16_tim_barber_untitled_hotknives.jpg

So I’m going to hate myself for writing this next line because of how cliché it sounds, but here it goes. I really like Tim Barber’s work because it leaves you asking questions. Okay, now that you’re done laughing, seriously take a second and look at the pictures. To me it seems like there is an open-ended question about something related to the narrative of the image, which makes me enjoy this work even more. Barber approaches photography in one of my favorite ways: simple, natural lighting, with a shoot-from-the-hip mentality; capturing everything and anything that comes his way. It makes for some beautiful images and this proved to be a good approach considering he is now shooting for the Urban Outfitters catalogs. Not only is he working on making photographs for himself but he’s also working on a really great magazine called The Journal which has some really great work. I have a feeling that we will be seeing a lot more of Tim Barber in the near future.
