Special Delivery: Vans Chukkas

August 6th, 2009 by Larry

vans_chukka.jpg

I love coming into The Treehouse and being greeting by new mail from buddies all over the world. Today, we opened a package from Chris who runs the humble blog Life After Midnight and works as a design intern for NYC brand, 3Sixteen that I’ve become a huge fan of.

We’ve been tasked to customize this pair of Vans Chukkas for a charity show taking place in Canada next year. Other participating artists include SoleFood NYC, Blaine Fontana, and Mark Dean Veca. They will be auctioned off with all profits going to the Winnipeg Children’s Hospital. How cool is that!?!

Also, keep tabs on Life After Midnight, as I’ll be participating in the Monday Morning Playlist interview series as soon as I can narrow down my tracklist!

Set It Off: Adrian Sosebee

August 5th, 2009 by Georgios

Name:
Adrian Z. Sosebee

Aka:
ZONE 3

Website:
http://www.adriansosebee.com
http://www.thefreakbeat.com
http://www.facebook.com/zone3
http://www.youtube.com/zone3

Where are you from?
Born on Moreland Ave., grew up off Boulevard ATL (near the zone3 police station i.e. nickname).

Who do you work for?
I have worked for a number of companies over the years at a freelance capacity such as MTV, BET, countless crunk rap videos, and the criterion collection. Now I am focusing on my personal brand (I know it’s a cliche) and I am developing a record label I plan to reveal in the Fall.

What are your Current Project(s)?
Currently I have been practicing and creating my DJ+VJ set where I will manipulate videos like records and play music at the same time. Once things are ready I will take the show on the road. I also have a few secret photography projects cooking, and I will be releasing some limited edition clothing I designed for fun very soon. I do post things for http://www.freshiam.net. I am trying to move away from the film/movie business as I have been in it for ten years now and I need a change and want to perform opposed to filming someone else perform.

Who would you love to work with?
Erik Brunetti (Fuct Clothing). I always dreamed of working with Rodney Dangerfield (RIP).

If you had to give all your sneakers away to charity except for one pair, which ones would you keep?
A pair of 2004 dunks that I painted with weird irradescent paint while I was in a mandated halfway house in Smyrna, check out a picture of them here

What’s on your iPod right now?
Jack Beats, Chase and Status, Fake Blood, XXXchange, Eli Escobar, AC Slater, Tommie Sunshine, Don Rimini, Sinden, Kaptain Cadillac, anything MAD DECENT, and the new freakbeat mix by dj sky. I also listen to Prince and New Order all day.

What’s your Favorite ATL food?
I love Mexican and that’s my favorite part of Atlanta, that there are plenty of Mexican spots. For the low low El Mexicano on Moreland is nice. Nava in buckhead is good for pricey mex. My favorite food in the world is cheese dip and chips with a glass of chocolate milk.

What’s your Favorite ATL hangout?
El Bar, Eastside Lounge, but most times I am alone at my desk working at home wishing some nice beautiful female would enter my life.

What are your Pet Peeves?
Happy Couples in public, Thieves, Liars, and Backbiters.

Shout outs?
All my blood relatives (even though they drive me crazy) , Presto & Cristo, AGA, Chilly-O, Whynatte, Street Local, Cobra Corps, all my ex’s, Rich Walters, Stan Stone, Action Jackson, Disco D (rip), Zone 7 Crew, Steve Dinero, Dosa & Michi, zach wolfe, freakytweets, SNT48, Duey FM, Rasta Root, Mr Lord, Ricky Raw, Dick McWoady and all those that underestimate my intelligence. PEACE.

The Basics: Inspiration

August 3rd, 2009 by Larry

arrowhead_beltbuckle.jpg

Good creatives draw inspirations from personal experiences. Many mentors of my own have emphasized the importance of putting myself and my own experiences into my creative efforts. Sometimes, it is very easy to struggle with the issue of What the Client Wants vs. What You Want to Do. When faced with a situation like this, it is best to pull back and search for new inspirations. Otherwise you put yourself in a miserable hole and you end up hating the work. Even worse, you give up and do “exactly-what-the-client-wants-and-you-want-to-jump-off-a-bridge-because-you-hate-yourself-for-being-such-a-pushover”. This leads to you delivering a P.O.S. that no one is happy with. And guess what? It’s your fault!

I’ve been lucky enough to travel over the last 10 days, and over the weekend I found this little nugget in Austin, Texas. It speaks volumes to me about some of the design decisions our creative team has made with our line, PROCESS, and where we are headed in the coming seasons. A bad designer would re-render this exact imagery and drop it on a tee or bag or whatever… For me, finding this gem is more about the “ah-ha” moment I had when I picked this up. This is truly the inspiration I needed for a thousand new ideas. Time to jam!
