Last night I attended the Thrashers vs. Predators preseason game on a whim, and it reaffirmed my sentiment that hockey is always better in person. I’ve been to my share of Thrashers games over the past 11 years of this expansion franchise and I have a blast every time. Is Atlanta a Hockeytown? Most would chime-in with a resounding “No way!”. Why isn’t Philips Arena packed? Is it alright if I call it the “Highlight Factory” even when it’s set up for hockey? “Blueland” just doesn’t do it for me. Lots of questions and very few answers.
With the NHL season approaching in less than 2 weeks, here are a few reasons to get excited about Atlanta Thrashers hockey:
1) They aren’t the Hawks. The Hawks have made some questionable decisions this off season that have the potential of blowing up in our faces and dooming the franchise for years to come. There is also a glimmer of hope that they will gel and be successful against the NBA’s Eastern Conference giants. Regardless of your opinions on the court, you might want consider spending your NBA dollars on hockey this season. It’s certainly a breath of ice-cold fresh air (bring a jacket. It gets cold in Philips). Yes, Atlanta Spirit Group owns both teams and they make dumb decisions like letting Ilya Kovalchuk convince himself that ATL isn’t the jam, but maybe the hard-hitting game and below 0° temperature will numb the pain.
2) Evander Kane is the face of the franchise. Why wouldn’t you want to back a dude who’s mother named him after ATL resident heavyweight champ Evander Holyfield.
3) There are new names in town, and these guys are winners. Chris Mason, Dustin Byfuglien, & Andrew Ladd join the roster. The latter two just finished playing a championship season, winning the Stanley Cup with the Chicago Blackhawks.
4) This is a young franchise, and there’s plenty of room on the bandwagon. All aboard ATL!

Our good friends at Black Sheep Skate Shop in Charlotte have recently released this photo of a collaboration that they have planned for retail release with Spitfire Wheels. If you’re unaware, Spitfire has been an industry leader for years. I love how one of the wheels in the pack is different. Very creative. We couldn’t be happier for our friends, as a collaboration like this has been a long time coming for what many would claim as the best skate shop on the east coast. Congrats Black Sheep!

Purge ATL is a new online publication that actively publishes relevant content on Atlanta creative culture. Although it’s not a print publication, Purge is more in-touch with what’s really going than other Atlanta-centric news sources.
Anyway, the Purge team is hosting an art show opening tonight at Picaflor studio. I’ve personally met 4 of the 6 people in this art show, and they fully receive my support. One person in particular, Ryan James, has been a close friend of mine since 2000. We were skateboarding buddies, roommates, band mates, and we’ve been involved in more hi-jinx than you could imagine over the past 10 years. It’s his 1st art show ever and I’m urging everyone to come out.
Details:
Picaflor Studio
Friday Sept. 24th
7 to 11pm
197 Arizona Ave
Suite 3
Atlanta, GA 30307

Recently, Dustin Chambers, Atlanta-based photographer and videographer, worked with Aleon Craft on a music video project. From the looks of it, it would have been a good time cruising around ATL in the Esperanzamobile. Aleon is pictured here wearing a collaboration tee that we worked on with Esperanza for Cinco de Mayo of this year. Can you still score one of these tees? For now, you’ll have to steal it from a friend who has one, or wait until next Cinco de Drinko.

V103 DJ Greg Street stopped by Standard Peachtree the other day to pick up some of the new PROCESS collection. He’s been a supporter of the store and the brand for quite some time now. ATL, be sure to listen to his show on your ride home from work on weekdays from 6 to 10pm on V103.

If you’ve ever played foosball against us or one of our mates at The Local on Ponce de Leon, you’ve heard us exclaim, “Cherry Tomato!” whenever the time comes to play the newest, cleanest (and therefore fastest) ball of the lot. The resemblance to a cherry tomato (or bubblegum) is uncanny with these fresh foosballs. Our new set just arrived for the table at our studio. Be sure to stop by sometime and challenge us.

Has anyone seen or tried Espolón Tequila? I want to purchase this just for the illustration and packaging alone. What are your thoughts? Is it the jam, or just another well designed bottle (hopefully not endorsed by P. Diddy). As soon as I get my hands on a bottle, I’ll give a solid review. Peep the full packaging after the jump.
